This isn't correct. I'm in one of the departments that handles them and we saw nowhere near that yesterday. But there are more today so maybe they'll catch up? I don't know.

From the article: "upward of 1,000 positions"

While that may be true, on the flip side and with how the industry is now, a lot of the people getting let go no will fail to work in the industry again. That's a pretty daunting thought if you lose your job.

I understand what you're saying, as I also have experienced too many layoffs the last few years. That means you and I have become more "comfortable" with the idea and going through all the cr@p.

Most of those getting laid off however are going through this for the first time. So their stress anxiety and reality is far far different than perhaps what you remember. So while they lasted, they have already been through the hell and stress and morale-sapping process of multiple rounds only to finally get the simultaneous kick in the @rse out the door and a sucker punch. They also know their reality of landing a new role anytime soon does not look good at all, whereas you and I perhaps had far more opportunity (except for the last ~6mo).

In short... your comment may come off as being insensitive to those experiencing their situation for the first time.

I had expected to hear more about the recent Cenovus/Husky layoffs here. But really it’s been silent.

I suspect they put a lot of hush-hush verbiage into their packages...

tf did you want them to do? Have people drive in for a day to get canned? Or have HR drive to their houses?

I wasn't saying it was a wrong strategy. But part of how the press knew how to dig into layoffs was the line of taxi's out front waiting to take people home.

Why are you jumping down my throat by the way?

They have lots of practice doing layoffs, they're probably getting good at it.

When I got laid off last year it was via zoom. Kinda. Except we didn’t all know how to use the software properly plus my ISP signal was super flakey that day. My “firing manager” completely lost the plot and the thread and supremely fumbled. For such a control nut it brought me some joy as least. Anyways I ended up taking control of the situation and helped them through their stumbling. I’m quite certain in the last year most HR teams and managers have since refined their soul crushing techniques.

This could be a serviceable reality television show.

Dead give-away when a producer from the Great Canadian Layoff Show gives you a call to film your backstory.

A few times this year, HR has contacted IT and while they have the Zoom going, IT is going through the backdoor and we remote brick the employee's laptop as soon as the Zoom is about to end. Then a courier is sent to pick up company property.

So that would be called a "Hack and no lube?" back door entry?

Man stuff like this makes you realize how inconsequential regular employees are in corporations.

No matter what your job is, what project you're currently working on, what deadlines are next week or tomorrow, how high priority the task is....#### all that, you're getting laid off and lose all access immediately.

It's hilarious and sad at the same time.
