The "playing in front of no fans" is a stop-gap measure. The league may be able to squeeze in the remainder of the regular season schedule under the wire.
I expect the playoffs to be cancelled outright.

I agree, because at some point it will likely hit a team, or something like that will happen that will make it remarkably stupid or impossible to continue.

On the first part, no the Blue Jackets are not leading the charge. Much like in San Jose, they are only doing this because state officials are giving them no choice.
On the second part, that is a complete impossibility. The NHL would get sued into oblivion by NBC and Rogers.

Agreed.
Only question IMO is if they don't award the cup, or if they award it to the president's trophy winner.

Have a short round robin of the top 5 teams maybe.

Playoffs are pure gravy for the owners. Players get no salary (outside of perhaps performance bonuses). It would cost more (gate-wise) to play to empty houses than cancelling outright.

I don't think there is any question that they would not award the Cup in this scenario.

That's totally incorrect. Playoff TV ratings are very high especially in Canada and while players don't get paid their regular salary the income from the playoffs is income factored into annual league revenues which determines the salary cap. Also TV carriers such as Rogers pay the NHL based on carrying regular season and playoffs. There's is no scenario where cancelling would cost less than playing to empty houses.

Not gonna lie, I'm at least mildly curious to watch an NHL game with no fans in the building.

There is a playoff payment pool set-up as per the CBA.
I think it is 16 million this year. Part of that is a payment to the President trophy winners as well.
However, the owners rake in the cash during the playoffs.

It’s disappointing and concerning to me that containment measures in the US seem to be coming from municipal and private sectors rather than upper levels of government. This lack of leadership could have a devastating impact on North America and the world if the US turns into Italy 2.0. Playoff and financial considerations for the NHL may seem insignificant within a week or two.

Players get no paycheques, but since the playoffs are obviously HRR, cancellations would cost the players tens of millions of dollars, if not more.
Both sides are going to take a big hit regardless. But cancellations would cost more.

I wonder if things blow over by summer if they would play a shortened playoffs. 3 to 5 game series in july/August. Probably not, but it could be an option.
Then again if things go full blown we may still be dealing with the virus come next October. Maybe no start to next season...
Interesting times ahead for sure.

They need to do the right thing and close all the games to the public.

I think it's very unlikely they'll cancel the playoffs. They would almost certainly want the TV revenue if they can't get the gate revenue.
