100% this. I can't remember if it was an interview or a STH meeting but I vividly recall Brad Treliving saying they're not building an AHL team to win a Calder cup. Some teams do but the Flames focus more on development. That's why most spots are taken by young kids and not AHL veterans.

Of course you don't, you don't follow the Oilers. No one who isn't a Flames fan would notice anyone on our list either who isn't named Jankowksi.

Not true. At one time every Oilers fan had a picture of Foo under their pillows.

I'm assuming a lot of people know Parsons. And Valimaki as well.

Who outside of flames fans? I'd guess no one. Maybe parsons cause of the world juniors but I doubt it. Valimaki no one knows. 16th pick of this year (iirc) I don't think anyone knows him.

Seriously?
Yes, those guys, for the reasons you listed. Most fans who are hardcore enough to post on messageboards, who are hardcore enough to watch a youtube stream of a rookie camp game would know those players pretty easily. Parson with his Memorial Cup and World Junior performances and Valimaki simply by being a 1st round pick.
Jankowski, Foo, Parsons, Valimaki are probably well known prospects. The Oilers at this point maybe only had Yamamoto who was known, again because of a recent first round pick. Ethan Bear maybe too, because of the strides he's made since draft day. Although most teams have one of those hopefuls.
None of that means anything long term, but it's pretty logical at this point.
No one knows the 16th overall pick in the most recent draft? In these hockey circles? Really bizarre stance IMO.

Well, I guess I was thinking of fans like myself that watch the draft and the WJC. I'm not saying because Parsons and Valimaki are generational players, just that they've been in hockey headlines recently.
Kinda why I know who Yamamoto is. Not because he's a phenom, but because he was a 1st rounder this past spring.
And if the Oilers had a stud goalie at the WJC I'd know who they were too.

You're right. Or Brayden Point could've been had. He has ties to the city, and looked great at the Top Prospects game here in Calgary that year. But Smith is big. Mind you, if his tools ever came together you'd have a beast.

Smith was probably the biggest let down of the game. He didn't use his size overly well, his foot speed hasn't improved and it seemed every play he was involved in died on his stick.
I was also expecting more from Ollas-Mattson. Aside from some good first passes he seemed to make some poor decisions defensively. The biggest gaffe being the ill-advised pinch that led to the Butcher breakaway goal.
It also seemed like Phillips and Dube were trying to do too much on their own. Then again I doubt there's much of a system in place.

^Ollas Mattson's pinch led to an A+ scoring chance. Doetzel was back and supposed to be covering but I think he gave up on the play because he thought the Flames had scored. By the time he realized they didn't he was so far out of position.

Or, and hear me out, the Oilers just have sweet #### all for prospects.
Oh and the obligatory "you don't know me" (snaps fingers round the world style)

I haven't seen any replays, I couldn't tell on the area jumbo tron, but did Wells get a piece of that one chance the flames had that lead to the Butcher breakaway?

Unnecessary risk when you're up 2-1, even if it is a try out exhibition game.

Feels good to have hockey back!
Was a pretty entertaining game. Thought Janko and Eat Bread were the Flames most dangerous forwards. Phillips had a couple good looks as well. Foo had good moments and bad. He just played a little too aggressive at times, something I'm sure he will get a better grasp on as training camp plays out.
Andersson and Valimaki were really good on the back end. I don't expect to Valimaki to make a push to make the big club this year but he's a lot closer to NHL ready than I thought he'd be.
Parsons is fun to watch. I want to see what he can do with a deeper and more rounded defense in front of him.

Phillips did well in creating chances. He just wasn't able to finish.
I'd like to see him play with some quality linemates in the upcoming games.
Parsons wasn't great, but a few of the goals were a result of defensive breakdowns.
I remember when Mason McDonald let it several soft goals in Penticton a few years ago. Parsons did not remind me of Mason McDonald, not at all.
As a team, they looked pretty rusty. But I'm sure they'll be better next game.
Out of everyone on the team, I was most impressed with Juuso Valimaki. He looked very steady, yet dangerous.
