But if we have to pay a pick to sign Stone, and we're short on picks why on earth would Brad re-sign him at this point?

I love this deal. There are a few reasons.
1) I watched 2 years ago as Hamonic played the hardest minutes against Florida's top players in the playoffs, and did an excellent job of shutting them down for the most part. He and Tavares were key in that playoff victory for the Isles over the Panthers. I've coveted him ever since.
2) We already have a LOT of defense prospects, quite of a few of which will end up taking over for some of the Flames current defenders in 3-4 years.
3) We have cost and talent certainty for the next 3 years for our top 4 defenders. That's important as the young forwards come into their own in that time frame.
4) We don't need to have a lot of picks at this point in the rebuild. We already have a LOT of good young players on the roster, most of whom are top 6 forwards: Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Bennett, and then players like Lazar and Jankowski who are dark horses. The picks aren't necessary right now, but more down the road when we need to replace some of the younger players that are currently leading this team.
Treliving knows that the window is opening this year, and thankfully he's making moves to solidify the team for that window to be open for 4-5 years at minimum. It'll be a balancing act moving forward, but this is a great move from a shrewd GM

#5/6 D, Backup + Bennett Ferland Chiasson Lazar
The forwards should take 6.5, the backup 1-2 (1 if young two if Chad Johnson) leaving 7 mill for a 5/6 pairing and a forward upgrade if possible. Don't see anyone up front making more than Versteeg's expected re-sign money.

I wonder if this is part of the reason for going after Hamonic.
Easier to have a young 3rd pair to shelter when you have a top 4 that can play 25 minutes each every night.
Would still rather add another good option to pair with Andersson though and to help in case of injury.

Isn't that pick something like a 5th? That is a pretty small price to add a guy that can slide up to the top 4 and given Hamonic's injury history it would be worthwhile.

That is a very tough future mortgaging IMO.

Well we can sit around and let our young core wait till some of those picks translate into good players(which they often don't), or we can trade the picks for good, young NHL proven players that solidify our young core and help them be better now.
Draft picks are nice for the future, but you can't sit around and wait forever if you have a core that can win now.

Yes, we have entered win now mode. Have you been watching a different hockey team?
I think some fans are so used to being a rebuilding team that they forget that you actually do eventually start making moves that are for now.

Should still try to get Stone to stay. You save money on a #4 in Hamonic, so maybe you spend a little more to keep a solid #5 option that can play up when needed with quality minutes as shown last spring.

Kulak-Andersson with Bartkowski as your 7th guy seems like something I'd be fine with.

End of the day the flames can always make trades next draft to recoupe picks.
As of today the flames are a better team with smith, hamonic and a fully integrated lazar when compared to last years team.

I love draft picks as much as anyone, but at this point, after already giving up a 3rd for the rental of Stone, i think it would actually more wasteful not to sign Stone if it's only going to cost you a 5th...
we already spent the 3rd. So signing Stone for a 5th is a no brainer if he is asking for a reasonable contract.

totally agree with this
Its very unlikely that 5th round pick is going to turn into a player 6 years from now that Stone is currently.
