You are joking right? Given the length of Gio's contract and the quality of Murray I would do that swap for sure. Can't see how it could ever work cap wise though for the Penguins.

No I am definitely not joking. Trading Giordano for a goalie would put us behind Colorado in terms of team defense.
We can acquire a goalie for little to no assets. Giving up Giordano is lunacy.
Wotherspoon would be our 3rd ranked defenseman in terms of games played.
Also, most goalies ebb and flow with respect to how well they play. Sure, there are a few that are consistent performers year after year, but for every Rinne or Price, there are 20 Berniers, Lalimes, Wards, Masons... guys who were good for a while but couldn't maintain it.
We have no idea at this point whether Murray will be able to maintain the level of play that he has put up for the past couple years. But the odds are that he won't.
So again, giving up huge assets to acquire a goalie (especially when other goalies are readily available) is idiocy.

Goalies who are UFA or trade bait, are there for a reason. Its like buying used cars ... there is a reason its for sale and its not because "the family has outgrown the vehicle". Don't overpay for someone else's problem on the used car lot. Just saying high likelihood that happens at the draft or free agent day.
Besides the whole league knows Calgary is a desperate buyer in net.

I was just thinking about the possibility of re-signing Elliott. Surely he might rebound and give us a better season while allowing us to take our time to find a better fit for our number 1. Anyways, just a possibility which isn't terrible, versus a long term commitment to a goaltender whose numbers are bound to go south.
Really like Raanta as well.

Some quotes from Treliving on the goaltending issue (warning Francis article):
http://www.calgarysun.com/2017/05/16...-the-right-one
Quote:
“At end of the day, here’s where we’re at,” said Treliving, laying out the various goaltending options he's juggling.
“If you want to go long-term on anyone, you’ve got to be careful on term and dollars. We have some young guys in the pipelines, but we also don’t want to expose them and they fail. Question is, is there someone out there we want to go long-term with?”
|
Quote:
“Do we stay where we are at?” said Treliving, pondering the possibility of bringing unrestricted free agents Chad Johnson and Elliott back despite the latter’s season-ending playoff collapse.
“We’ve talked to both guys to get a sense of where they are at. We were really comfortable with how our goaltending shaped up this year. We went from 30th to 14th. Do we think the goaltending played up to its potential in the playoffs? Probably not. But let’s not forget, without those guys, we end the year a little earlier.
“You get through the emotion and get past that. When your eyes are bleeding because you’re so wound up, you usually make bad decisions. So you analyze it.”
|
Quote:
Treliving’s meetings with scouts are coming up, and one of the major questions to be answered is simple.
“I’m not sure there are guys capable of 60 games, so is there a guy who can play 50 games or a guy who hasn’t done it that should get the chance?” asked Treliving.

Sometimes I find myself being ok with bringing back Elliott but then I always come back to the 3rd we give up to sign him again and I second guess it and I'm back to square one.

And without their stretches of crappy play we end up with home ice.
Sick of the narrative that Elliott and Johnson saved the season. If they just played average hockey from the get go it wouldn't have needed saving. And then Elliott basically threw the season away with his round 1 performance, after two decent months.

I'm not disagreeing with the overall sentiment, but to be fair to the goaltenders, at the very start the season we were losing games by 2-4 goals. With better goaltending we would likely have lost them by 1-2 goals.
I also think Johnsons and Elliotts numbers don't do justice to Johnson, as Johnson played most of his games in the first half of the season, when the team overall was playing much worse than when Elliott had the net. I think if Johnson had been the starter for the whole season, he would likely have had numbers somewhere around the league average.

Lol, this is definitely about the time of year that horrible trade proposals start popping up on this forum. Like most posters, I don't relish it, but each one is like a bad train wreck or car crash you can't tear your eyes away from.

It's usually bad trade proposals in favour of the Flames though

Man it would be awesome if the Flames could pry Schneider out of NJ; I know it's a big stretch but it would shore up the position for us for a long time and we have assets that we can move to help their rebuild

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Some people didn't want Bishop signed here for $6M (or more) for 6 years because he would be 36 when the contract was up. Schneider is no different. Or is it more the injury concerns (for Bishop) than the cost?
