I found myself cheering for Coco last night. She just hammers the ball and she's intense which is good in tennis. We don't need another rail-thin -ova with no emotion hitting moonballs. Coco has jumped from 35 to 20 in the rankings.
The fact she beat Bouchard skews our opinion of her, I hope they meet many times this year.
It certainly doesn't hurt to have a perceived villain or antagonist to draw more eyeballs to a particular sport. At the risk of showing my age, I remember the original bad boy Ilie Nastase who was quickly followed by guys like Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. In all three cases, they were able to back up their attitudes with their respective games. It may be too early in Coco's case to know if she can continue this fine play, but I don't mind the brashness.
so is this newfound Coco hammer power a new thing, or has she always been hitting the cover off the ball? no I'm not asking specifically about roids, but I would have expected someone who hits ATP level rally shots off both wings would have been hyped sooner. she's been on tour for 7+ years now.

She's always been hitting the cover off the ball and not able to control it. She's been in the 40 to 70 ranking range for years because against the better players she cant win making 50 errors per match (basically Bouchard last 2 years).
This is a great run but can she hit the ball this hard, this consistently and not get mad at herself for a full season? She's top 20 now and will get better draws. Can she make the most of it? or be a mindless ballbasher?
Same with a guy like Istomin. Those shots can land in for a week, what happen next week? next month?

Lucic-Baroni into the semis. So looking at three semi finalists over the age of 34 for the women, plus Roger for the men. Revenge of the (by tennis standards) senior citizens!

wonderful story. 18 years! between grand slam semifinal appearances. After what she's been through it's amazing. That book she writes one day will be a best seller.
