I was talking to a friend about this the other night, since we both missed the "Pokemon" phase when we were younger, as it trended after we hit adulthood. We were talking about what sort of "Go" we'd have liked, and I said "Man, if they come out with a 'Transformers Go' I'm there!"
I could see plenty of depths to be plumbed here, including games that make more physical activity, too. Going to a step counter instead of GPS. Going to a step counter and a timer, etc.

Fighting types also smoke rock types. Water and grass are effective as well, but do t have the resistance. Rock type has so many weaknesses it's tough to bother with.

There is a pokestop in the lobby of my building and my GPS is putting me across the street where there isn't one. Lame.

So what is the best way to approach the gyms? I don't quite understand the team portion of it

Evolved them once for XP, under Lucky Egg if possible, and then ditch for candy

In simplest terms, you gain xp and gold by training and/or holding a gym.
You can train an individual Pokémon at a gym the same color as yours. Once the prestige of that gym is maxed out at its current level, you can leave a Pokémon there to try to hold it. This would raise the level of your gym.
Taking a gym over let's you use 6 Pokémon to battle the one(s) holding it. There is more to choosing you 6 than one first thinks. Low level gyms are pretty easy (6 vs 1 or 2). Higher levels gyms are better left to trainers who spend all day (or money) playing. If there is 2 Pokémon guarding a gym, when you defeat them both, only 1 is left guarding it. When you defeat the last enemy you can claim the gym by leaving a Pokémon there.
Hope that is less confusing than it looks.

A easier way to take a Gym and always be 6v1 is to defeat the first enemy, which is the easiest. Then run away. It still loses experience and will de-level eventually. You can do this until there is only the 1 left and then 6v1 him to take it.

Also to add to the above post about gyms. You can hold up to 6 gyms at 1 time - obviously with the popularity of this game it will be difficult to hold 2 let alone 6. When you hold a gym, go to the shop. At the top right corner you will see a shield with a number in it (the number is the number of gyms you are currently in). If you click this you get pokecoins - it is the only way you can get pokecoins besides buying them. You get 10 coins every time you hit that but can only hit it every 24 hours.
Ideally you should take a gym once a day to get your coins.

If you are within around 50-60%+ of the CP levels of the pokemon guarding the gym, IMO it's worth it. The game is biased to attackers. You get more pokemon and get to choose pokemon strong against the pokemon defending the gym. Defenders are at a disadvantage.
Short taps to attack, long hold to use a power attack (blue bars that charge up when you attack).
Team aspect is when people with same colors as you are attacking at the same time as you are (friends, strangers whoever).
There's been something floating around about Cross Iron banning pokemon Go on their premises. I wouldn't take too much stock into this "rumor" until Cross Iron comes out with an official comment. By understanding so far was security chased away a few peoples at Cross Iron after hours and/or 10-15 minutes before closing. Something they did prior to Pokemon go, but pitch forks from the uninformed are already coming out.

^ Businesses can apparently request to have pokestops removed if they deem them detrimental. This would definitely cut down on players in a particular area.

Yeah, the GPS gets a bit wonky when you're up in a high rise downtown. It never maps me where I actually am, but does allow me to hit a bunch of pokestops without actually going anywhere. Not complaining.

Yeah it shows me half a block over but right on a pokestop so works out for me, also being higher up my guy runs around a bunch which is good for hatching eggs.
Businesses can also apply to be a pokestop and people can submit landmarks etc on the Niantic website, no houses

You need to find areas somewhere nearby where pokestops are very dense.
Our family plays together, on a limited basis. My little city (on south shore of Montreal) is a Pokemon desert. The nearest pokestop is 1.5km from my house (they missed lots of parks). The next city over is rich in historical landmarks, etc. We drove the 10 minutes over there the other evening and walked around some wonderful little neighborhoods. In one 3 block loop there is 21 pokestops. It was a really fun evening - and I expect we will go more often.

We did that last night but in and around my area we don't have a lot of stops. My son was trying to catch a stupid Zubat and used all of my balls.
Tonight I think we are going to head cross iron. According to that Google map there are tonne there.

My buddy emailed Cross Iron mills. You CAN play Pokemon Go as long as you are respectful to other shoppers (don't clog walking areas and walk into people and things etc. I presume). Furthermore, they will properly enforce trespassing rules (ie: They will ask you to leave after the mall is closed and security will request you leave if you're driving in circles around the mall after they are closed. This is no different than a time prior to pokemon go.) I believe this was the situation of anecdotal evidence of being thrown out.
Play away.
