Gully is already Associate Coach in Vancouver, they aren't going to let him interview for a lateral job

It's clear to me now that we've all been barking up the wrong tree. The Flames aren't going to hire a coach at all. They've been building one in Treliving's mad scientist lab. They are taking parts of all the great coaches of the past: Roger Neilson's video eyes, Lester Patrick's steely nerves, Fred Shero's chalkboard-writing fingers, Pat Burns' moustache, Bob Johnson's schnozz, and Toe Blake's… er… toe.

He will be the greatest motivating coach of all time, because anybody who has a bad shift will have to sit at the end of the bench where he's standing, and smell the formaldehyde. Everyone will want to stay as far away as possible.

Welcome and fear the new bench boss of the Calgary Flames: Coachenstein!

Oh, I though he was an assistant in Vancouver.

At any rate, I am getting the sense that "plan A" didn't work out 100%, and now we are on to "plan B". I am sure BT has plans A through Z anyway.

I think this is just taking some time to get the details sorted out. No need to always try and create unlikely scenarios.
While I'm not saying your wrong, to your point there was all sorts of time. So maybe their first choice wasn't willing to commit and was weighing his options. Things take time, but if they knew who they wanted on Monday, this likely could have been done by now (maybe it is). Ducks and others seemed to be able to move quickly once they agreed with their man.

And this isn't a complaint on my part, I'm fine with whatever time it takes, but I am surprised we don't know yet given what we heard Monday.

I agree. Treliving isn't the type of person to put off to tomorrow what can be done today. If the person he wants is available and also wants to coach the Flames, it would be a done deal. I think it's perfectly reasonable to think that one or both sides (whoever the other side is) wasn't completely on-board.

Could be simply contract negotiations. I think folks are over thinking this

i think there is a very simple answer.

That being...treliving wasn't making a decision until he talked to every guy he thought might be a fit and until the SC was awarded that couldn't happen. Once he had his final candidate(s) input and interview.....he made his decision that day. Now it's likely just some logistics and whatnot to get everything and everyone in the same place for the presser.

Considering this is the only head coaching job available you'd think contract negotiations would be rather straightforward.

But it also removes all the urgency I suppose.

Dreger says Gulutzan has been hired... just not announced yet

Steinberg and Kerr yesterday afternoon were hinting they're going to be at the Dome at 9 today.

I think the hold up is most likely the decision on the assistant/associate coaches. I'm sure they want all that figured out before making a announcement.

Given the channels this has to pass through (GM, President, Ownership etc) its not suprising that a decison could be made at the start of the week but not finalized until the end of it. My VP is down the hall but it can take several days to get anything signed. I'm just wondering if we're all swerved this morning (or this afternoon or this weekend - thanks Dregs) and it isn't Gulutzan.

As I said before this regime simply does announcements on their own schedule. Some teams confirm as soon as the cat is out of the bag but the Flames want to announce things on their terms.
