The Interviews during the draft and at the combine will sort the rest out. Unless you think you can trade down and grab another asset. I like players down the line too so I'd be okay with trading down this year.

Really, literally every Cup winner since 2001? Are you totally forgetting about Detroit? The Wings have won the Cup twice since 2001 (2002, 2008) but the last time they picked in the top 3 was 1990.

They've also all been based in US cities, so I guess a franchise relocation is necessary, too, huh?

If that's the case Monahan and Bennett could have been in the top three in different years or circumstances.

Guess it's time to trade for MA Fleury

That's a bit disappointing to drop 1 spot down. Flames can never catch a break. Sigh! I'm sure Leafs fans are overjoyed. Can't wait until their first round pick to be a bust!

Cox has Oilers taking Juolevi, Canucks Dubois, leaving Tkachuk to the Flames

Sigh. Still doesn't show why it's "necessary".

Both those teams had top 3 picks, they werent drafted by Detroit though. They also had the second greatest defenceman of all time, so there's a chance we could draft somebody like that, but it's probably like one in five thousand.

Hmm. . Sergachev @ 14 and McLeod @ 17 this draft is so weird.

I guess mocks can be all over.

I think it's entirely possible that Vancouver may have a defenseman as their best player available for their slot, assuming Dubois goes to Edmonton. I feel like we have about a 50/50 shot of getting Tkachuk at 6.

If not, then we get whatever defenseman the Flames think is best in the draft. I am fine with either scenario.

If Tkachuk is there and two of D men are there, who do you take?

Gaudreau would also go first overall in the 2011 draft.

Magnum what about redrafts where Johnny would 100% go top 3. Does that give us a chance at the cup again?

I just want to have the flames be a contender and this was likely our best chance to get a difference maker. We will be in mid-table obscurity for the next five years unless something amazing happens.

Personally, I would rather we take a forward, so Tkachuk. But if the Flames scouts have someone like Chychrun clearly ahead of him, then I trust their judgment.

It already did, we drafted the best player in the 2011 draft 104th overall.

Elite players drafted top3 overall:
Crosby
Kane
Ovechkin
Doughty
Malkin
Tavares
Toews
Stamkos
Seguin
Thornton
McDavid
Hall?

Elite players from outside top3 OA
Karlsson
Benn
Bergeron
Kopitar
Keith
Pavelski
Perry
Getzlaff
Kesler
Johnson
Giroux
Subban
Gaudreau?
Kuznetsov?

Maybe not a complete list, but the chances of drafting or acquiring two elite players without a top 3 are slim to nil. Anaheim managed to do it in the deep 2003 draft. I'll eat crow if St. Louis manages to win the Cup this year, but even they had a first overall somewhat recently.
