who could have also been recalled before the deadline. but i am done wasting my time on this topic. seems to me this is more an anti-jones lynch mob than anything. honestly with how people treat the players here, i don't know how we sign any free agents

Treliving specifically said that he wants to have only the minimum number of healthy players on the roster so that he doesn't have to use non-emergency callups. That means that if you are on the team and healthy, you have to play. So you are wrong again.

So? These starts for Ortio are developmental. We're not making the playoffs, they know it, we know it. So why the pitchforks for a kid trying to find some footing in the NHL.

Where were the pitchforks? People are asking what happened to the "always earned" mantra.
And what if the team KNOWS Ortio isn't in their plans for next year. Doesn't it make more sense to see if Backstrum could be a backup?

We all agree, except for you, that it's better to get a pick for Jones than let him walk for nothing. Somehow, in your mind, that gets twisted into a lynch mob. The mods will probably ding me for saying this, but that's delusional thinking on your part.

Yeah this whole "Backstrom was guaranteed playing time to waive" is complete speculative horse**** made worse by Millions. I like the guy but man he spreads a lot of misinformation.
Treliving admitted in interview on the Fan about the trade that acquiring Backstrom wasn't about getting someone to play goal for us. Backstrom waived because he hasn't played a game in a year, and we were willing to take him, so duh you waive just for the chance. But a promise? Asinine

I'm afraid we can go on repeating it forever and Alberta_Beef will never get it. He (she?) announced his (her?) intention not to get anything:

Yes we could've recalled Hathaway and not moved Jones. But you and I both know that Hartley wouldn't have scratched Jones to play Hathaway. So trading Jones open up a spot in the lineup that Hartley is forced to play a young player in. Get it yet?
Yeah it appears to be an anti-Jones lynch mob, that's it! LOL

Ortio needs I believe 8 more games or else he becomes a UFA. Would be brutal asset management to have Backstrom and Hiller let that happen if they have any desire to keep him around.
Basically if they send him down and keep him down - they have no desire for him to be in the organization.

Am I the only one who actually feels relieved that we got a guy, even though he hasn't played in over a year, rather than think about finishing the season with Ortio and Hiller?

With his play this year, both in the AHL and NHL, are we sure they'd even want to keep him?

Here are the last six 6th round picks for the Flames:
2009: Ortio (on the roster)
2011: Brossoit (traded for a roster player)
2012: Coda Gordon (bust)
2013: Harrison (probably a bust)
2014: Ollas-Mattsson (played in the WJCs and is still very much a dark horse prospect)
2105: Mangiapane (almost certainly slips into our top 10 on the prospect list this summer)
So out of 6, there are 2 guys currently in the NHL and 2 with a shot
Seems to me that there is at least some value in a 6th round pick

Just because he goes UFA doesn't mean the Flames can't sign him either before that happens or after. Ortio was available, free of charge, to all other teams on waivers this season. No one is knocking down the doors for his service.

Any chance Backstrom would agree to an AHL conditioning stint? I mean, the guy hasn't played a game all season -- I have a bad feeling he'd get lit up like a Christmas tree (especially with our suspect defence/PK).
P.S. To the people crapping on the 6th round pick, one of the "assets" we acquired yesterday was a 7th round pick.

Can you even send players down on conditioning stints after the deadline? The CBA doesn't say anything about it, but I'm not familiar with the AHL's rules for eligibility.

Well as it turns out there's actually posters trying to argue that a trade that swapped two expiring contracts, and opened up a forward position for us to try out some AHLer's AND gave us a 6th round pick is somehow a bad trade for the Flames, in a season that's already lost.
You can certainly argue that it's a pretty "meh" trade, I don't think you'd have many arguing that, but it's still a good "meh" trade, there shouldn't be anyone saying it's a bad "meh" trade. Yet here were are. Unbelievable.

That's me to a T
Saw 18 pages and wondered if the deal fell through, background on how the deal went down, some controversy on Backstrom and his NTC
instead people upset about losing Jones for a 6th ...
good for business, bad for sanity

David Jones who? We barely knew him, with the constant string of injuries and all. Then when he was healthy, for the most part save for a few moments in the years he has been here, was a ghost.
It is weird that there's some winging about the trade. we got rid of a severely overpaid player who barely made a mark in his time here. Because when he almost made a mark, he hurt himself doing so.
And I loved the trade for Jones when Feaster made it. I'd rather have ghostly Jones than Whiny baby Tanguay. That was a great trade solely for the fact the locker was turning the page on the Iggy era.

Looks like Backstrom is going to get into some games
Sean Kelso @kelsohockey

I still think Backstrom could be re-signed on a 1 year deal to better mentor Ortio. He's much more capable than Hiller and the current goalie coach.
I miss Malarchuk, he had a better read on this stable of goalies.

I agree with part 1. However, I do not believe the Flames want Ortio back.
