When's the last time the Flames actually went to an Arbitration hearing/ruling? From what I remember, Ian White got settled outside the room before the hearing got started, but off-hand, I can't remember any recent ones that went as far as the ruling.

Last one I remember is Kiprusoff in 2004...for a contract he never collected a cent from.

I think Sylvanfan is right.
The last 3 all signed deals prior to the hearings.
2014 - Colborne
2010 - Ian White
2007 - Eric Godard

So Bouma only has 1 year left of RFA status? If this is the case, we're definitely going to see a 1 year deal awarded today. Because I believe the team gets to decide whether it's a 1 or 2 year deal.

Why wouldn't Flames do a two year deal, and get a year of UFA?

About to say the same. I thought the key was to eat up as much of UFA years as possible on the last RFA contract.

Wouldn't they want to sign a 1 year deal to get to the end of RFA, and then a longer term?

They didn't settle prior to it.

They would sign him to a 1 year deal so that he is RFA after next season and from there attempt to buy UFA years if they can/want to.
If they sign him to a 2 year deal he will be UFA after that contract is done.

I guess the Flames took a firm stance during negotiations.
I wish they had negotiated this hard with Raymond, Engelland and Stajan. Different situations I know but seems like they paid more than they needed to for those players.

May have only been last summer that they signed those contracts, but it was a very different time for this organization. They were just looking for warm bodies at this point last year. Nobody could have predicted/expected our youngsters to perform the way they did last season.
I don't care for the hardline stance they're taking with Bouma though. He's a high quality 3rd liner that IMO is crucial to have if you want to succeed in the playoffs. His asking price of 2.5M is not high... it's right in the ballpark of what he's worth.
3yrs @ 2.25 AAV would be a great deal for both sides, and I'm sure Bouma would sign that.

My take on it is, that the flames only want to do one year on most of their 3rd and 4th line type players this year for several reasons. They want room available for up and comers if needed and they don't want too many of these guys locked up for more than a year right now if they can help it...Give Bouma a nice raise and see how it goes this year

Given that it can take a couple of days for the arbitrator's ruling, there's still time for the sides to agree on their own deal.

Another option that I've sometimes employed at arbitration hearings is this: both parties agree to ask the arbitrator to delay releasing his or her award for a certain period of time while the parties try to work out a resolution amongst themselves (sometimes informed now by their perceptions of how the evidence went in at the hearing etc.) Can be quite effective.

Those players are UFAs, it's different. You have to pay more for UFAs.

How quickly do we usually hear the ruling on a arb case?
As per the poll I think he gets 2 mill in a deal but for some reason feel the arbitrator would award 1.8 but we never hear that come out.

The ruling must be made within 48 hours of the close of the hearing, according to the CBA.

Dean Molberg @fan960boomer
The #Flames and Lance Bouma are roughly 3 hours into their arbitration hearing, so no last minute deal struck.
Hearing must be close to being over. IIRC, each side only has 90 minutes to present their case.
