With the signing of dougie Hamilton and some up and coming defensive prospects, Calgary has some leverage over gios is contract

Sorry but that hack has no insight worth listening to.

Wait until Friedman or McKenzie say something.

Has any player ever been signed to a deal that pays them 9mil when they're 42?

Only way we trade Gio is if we can get a young, NHL ready, bonafide top 2 defenceman like Dougie Hamilton and be able to sign him to a reasonable long term contract... too bad Boston would never be dumb enough to let that happen lol...

Wait, what?

Gotta trade him if he doesn't move off of the 8 years x 9 mill. I loved his year last year but I also remember he has had a few underwhelming years. Which leads me to believe that he is either a really late bloomer or last year was the exception not the rule.

5 MAYBE 6 year term at 7.5 (ish) per year.

Wow....Steep price. Maybe 9M over 3 or 4 years, but 8? Hell no.

After seeing teams lose excellent young players due to older veterans with high cap hits I really walk away from those trade demands. No way I pay a 37-39 year old those dollars. In the next year or two Giordano, Flames and fans have to realize that his role will start to diminish.

I want a long sustained chance at winning so that means keeping our young players around. Not adding vets for a one and done.

Some of you sound like Sweeney and Milbury in Boston: I don't like their opening asking price - trade him!!

It's a negotiation.

Even Winter knows that a 33 year old Giordano is not worth 8 x $9

In my opinion it is too great of a risk to go into the season without having Giordano extended.

One injury at the wrong time could be a crippling move, while the right trade at the right time could hyper-accelerate Calgary's entrance into contender status.

Those aren't reasonable contract demands. I understand you go in with your biggest number and work from there, but that is an insulting number to start with if true.

We have seen enough of Treliving's moves this week to trust him to get this extension done on reasonable terms. Gio is the heart and soul of the franchise and whatever deal gets done will recognize that, but will also recognize that to be successful this franchise needs to sign many other players to longer term deals in the next 2-3 years.

Gio's agent is of course going to start out asking for the sun and the moon. But in the end a rational deal will prevail that works for Gio and works for the Flames. A 6 year deal, that is a bit front-end loaded, but with an AAV in the range of $7.5MM would make sense.

Let's trust in Treliving to get it done right.

8 years should be off the table at any reasonable/legal cap hit. Assuming he starts with salary in years 1-2 of around 9M, the value can only decline so much over the term of a deal.
I think this is Winter's way of saying - so you went out and got Hamilton - that doesn't change our position

Let's be fair here, it is a negotiation and that's how the game works. That being said, if Giordano really is the captain everyone likes to state he is, he should be telling his agent that he needs to do everything in his power to ensure that this contract is both fair to the player and more importantly, fair to the team. This kind of deal can be the difference between handcuffing an organization and giving them the financial flexibility to make the moves necessary to win a championship.

If I was Gio, I'd be asking for 7M over 5 years, setting the bar for the rest of the team.

Anything over 5 years is too long in term. Anything over $7.5M is too much money. He pushes beyond that and you thank him for his service and trade him for a bundle. You don't want to Chiarelli the team by giving out big contracts that don't make sense to the team.

Gio is high off his ass. There is no comparable contract that has a player of his age carrying such a high cap-hit.

....I'm sure it's all just part of negotiations and we'll find a middle ground.

I think 7.75 x 6 is good enough for both sides.

As of today he's definitely worth 9M, but a few years down the road? I can't see it.

I like that deal. And hey if he wants it front loaded that's great!
