I am very excited to see how the Flames look heading into Next season and much of that will be completed by early July.
From what we have heard it looks like goaltending will be vastly different. Ramo appears to be gone, and Hiller is on the block. Will it be Lehner, Talbot, or someone else with Ortio? (Hiller is still an option)
Treliving and Burke talk about size and blue line depth. Will that be addressed via trade or free agency?
I am hopeful management will make improvements that keep this team in position to make the playoffs again next year

FYI, rotoworld has contract breakdowns that seem to be accurate, they don't list NMC's though. They're also a pretty good source for injury reports.

Staal was initially traded to the Canes for the 8th overall selection (Dumoulin) and Brandon Sutter.
It would be difficult to pry him for something that's on the cheaper side.

No thanks to Jordan Staal, that is a horrible contract. I'd take Eric as a rental if there is some Vanek type situation and he can be had for a 2nd plus a prospect.

John Jaeckel has a Rumor floating in Chicago of a Leaf offer for Sharp...
2015 1st (24th overall, 2016 2nd, Stuart Percy, good, puck-moving D-man, lefty for Sharpy. Sharp has been asked if he will waive.
Also Jaeckel says Leafs want Shaw too...
IMO, that is too little return for both...if it is just Sharp, though, moving the contract would be the priority

I figured Pick #24 would've been in play for Sharp. The extra 2nd and percy is a surprise.

I would think that for that price tag that shaw would be going as well. That's way too much for Sharp.

Why would the Leafs want Sharp anyway?
They are one of the last teams in the league that should be giving up futures for 33 year old vets.

For the same reason why Hudler and Giordano are so important to our team.
You need good vets to help establish the identity of a team during a rebuild. If you don't have those pieces in place...well...then...Edmonton. Yeah, they shouldn't be giving up futures - but if that's the cost, so be it. The consequences of NOT having that mentorship in place are dyer.
Also, Toronto will likely have plenty of "futures" after this week (Kessel, Phaneuf, whatever else may be dealt prior to the draft).

They'd take Sharp as a mentor like Hudler and could always flip him at the deadline but they'd probably make this deal to get Shaw with Sharp.

But we didn't give up any assets for those players in the outset of the rebuild. They were from a previous era.
If the Leafs can get him for a 3rd, maybe it makes some sense.

Yes, but we didn't trade 1st round picks or decent prospects after the start of the rebuild to get those veteran players.

So, overpay to get Sharp now to mentor the kids for 3/4 season and then sell for less than what you paid?
LOL. Sounds like something leafs would do and Tampa will benefit from (my guess is that Sharp starts next playoffs on that roster or the Isles).

So, because Toronto doesn't have the same luxury as us (inheriting good vets from a previous regime), they should just go ahead and wander aimlessly through the woods on the ice ala Edmonton? Teams need leadership, and Babcock is step 1 just as Hartley was for us. They need to build from their - they need to obtain that foundation.
Toronto is going to have no shortage of future assets after they're done dealing away Kessel and others. To attract free agents, they'll likely have to hand out bad contracts with toxic term attached to them - so that's not a good option either.

There are two points here:
The point you are making, is one I don't think anyone has a problem with. Yes, teams need good leaders for rebuilds.
That is separate from the point stating the trade scenario for Sharp is lopsided towards the Hawks.

It was actually Dumoulin, Sutter, and the 8th pick. Which turned out to be Derrick Pouliot.
Definitely a hefty price.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Flames 1st rounder this year should be untouchable. Whoever we take in the first this year will spend at least another year in junior and in 2-3 years when the flames are true contenders they will still be cost controlled under their ELC. If we can get a middle six forward or a #3-5 dman who is on an ELC will go a long way towards pushing a team to the cup

Unless the management team can hit an absolute home run, I would love to see them make all 6 picks in the first 3 rounds. Possibly even trade a roster player for more picks (Raymond with rained salery ect). Having a restocked prospect cupboard bloom in 3 years would be perfect! Sounds like this draft has come at the perfect time during the rebuild.

I would be fine with them making all the picks but if Treliving does not add to this roster over the summer the Flames are poised to take a step back unless they see huge steps forward from their young players.
I personally hope they add some talent on the blueline and top 6 to keep pace with the west. LA, Dallas, Colorado likely are all better. Even Edmonton won't be an easy 10pts like it was last year.
If they make all 6 picks so be it but I am hoping one of those seconds is used for a player that will help now and for a few seasons
