ok, I liked FF7 and I was like "awesome, it would be cool to play it again with way better graphics" .. but holy #### man. Some people really love this ####.

For a lot of those people, FF7 is what got them into gaming.

It's nostalgia overload.
Not only was it a lot of people's introduction to both Final Fantasy and JRPGs (newbs...), but FF VII was a seminal title of the original Playstation era; only Gran Turismo sold more copies. The game made Sony into a video gaming juggernaut.

FFVII also saved Square from the brink of destruction. The game was amazing and I still run through it today on my old PSX. I remember saving up enough money to buy a used copy from Ranbow Video and I still have that disk today.
It was the first real 'open world' type game and I loved all of the hidden materia caves, hunting for caribo nuts to breed my chocobos into a black chocobo and spending an hour trying to down the emerald weapon. The feeling taking down the Emerald and Ruby weapons were great as a kid and you really felt like you accomplished something.
I can't wait for this remake to be released and am jumping up and down on the hype train.

IIRC, Square was still riding high at that point - FF VI was a huge hit - but they blew all of the money they made on VII for that disaster of a movie, and that is what almost did them in.
What would really blow my mind (but will never happen) is if they ever made an Xenogears remake, and actually made the 2nd disc a full game rather than the story mode setting we got (due to them running out of money). That game was epic, and still is my favourite game of all time.
FF7 remake is awesome too though. . I really hope it doesn't take 3+ years to make.
San Andreas was digitally released for the 360 last year. Same game, no alterations, it does support achievements. So that would just be a retail release of it.
Considering that we have remakes of Final Fantasy up to IV and then we have VII — I’ve been working with Mr. [Yoshinori] Kitase since Final Fantasy V, and we’ve noticed that V and VI are missing. That bothers me," Nomura told VentureBeat. "How come we skipped over those two?"
Might take a while, but you might get your wish! We'll focus on VII for now though
