Milos played okay today, but that foot looks like it's still bothering him in a straight set loss to Murray in Madrid (6-4, 7-5). His ground strokes were pretty good today, it was his serve that let him down when he needed it most.

He's already pulled out of next week's event due to that foot. Seems like he tried to gut through today, and still made a competition out of it.

Here's a small update from Facebook on his injury:
Milos Raonic
I will be undergoing surgery to repair a nerve in my right foot. I withdrew from Rome to be ready to compete as soon as possible.

I read that this surgery has an expected recovery time of 1.5 to 2 weeks, so he could still be ready in time for the French Open.

I was just browsing the Tennis Canada twitter feed and it sounds like Milos will be up to number 4 in the rankings tomorrow. Nadal lost today, so I'm assuming that has some direction correlation?
Regardless, how awesome to see a Canadian in that spot? Brilliant.

I believe Rafa will drop to 7 (first time out of the top 5 in a decade?!) so the mix up top is becoming supremely interesting leading up to the French. obviously Rafa losing 4 times already on clay this year is ominous, and more so that it was to headcase Andy. it's quite easy to view this as a steep fall off the cliff, even if he's been gradually improving through the spring.
if he loses early again in Rome then it could be out of the top 8 and then it would be a murder draw that could see a Rafa/Djoker quarter, which is ridiculous. in my mind, I'm seeing a Djoker calendar slam in the making for 2015. the window of vets passing into the sunset before youngins rise to take their place hasn't been wider than it is now for him.

almost immediately Milos is back down to #6 due to not playing in Rome. If Nadal makes the Final that'll knock Milos down to #7.
If Nadal is anywhere from 5-8 in Paris, he could get Djoker in the quarters.

Two months since her last win, but a win today for Genie in Rome, 6-3, 6-4. Let us hope that some positive vibes and winning mentality can start to come back for her.

Well I didn't see the match, but the summary is bizarre enough.
3 hour match
Genie served for the match 3 times
Saved 4 match points against
Had one match point in the 3rd set breaker...and then double faulted twice in a row
Ultimately loses to Suarez-Navarro 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (7). She seems to have had a lot more trouble holding her nerves since getting to the Wimbledon final last year.
Also sounds like Milos surgery went well, but I'd prefer he sit out the French. Unlikely to win it anyways, and the brutally physical nature of clay is probably not the best way to come back after surgery on your foot.

Tough loss for Genie, but at least she was competitive in that match, rather than the 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 type score lines she's been giving up.

Friendly reminder: Federer-Djokovic final tomorrow. Only a handful more times we'll get to see this amazing matchup. Hopefully in about 3 weeks too.

Milos has indeed pulled out of the French Open. It's better to be 100% for Wimbledon than pushing it on clay.

It's the right move for two reasons:
1. Clay is vicious on the body, so coming back to play the most gruelling event of the year is a massive risk.
2. He sets himself up for Wimbledon. So right now he can start to focus, prep and practice for grass while everyone else is on clay. A nice advantage to have.

He's got a lot of points to defend in Wimbledon.

He had a lot of points to defend at the French Open as well. He did make the right call in pulling out of Roland Garros, though, as the Senator points out above.

Not sure what Novak did to piss off the French Open, but a QF-SF-F draw of Nadal, Murray and Federer is pretty ridiculous.
Genie's quarter looks manageable, but then again with a 1st round matchup against a French woman....will be an interesting test of her head.

Federer at 10/1 odds isn't bad. He's got nobody until the final. His half is:
5 Nishikori
4 Berdych
8 Wawrinka
2 Federer

I'd have more confidence in Fed if he didn't have that typical old man habit of playing at least one atrocious match every other tournament or so. still, he's got to be loving this last realistic crack at another Coupe des Mousquetaires. I still think it's amazing that if Rafa never existed, he'd probably own more of those in the collection than Aussie trophies.
I'm annoyed at that Nole half meaning that I probably won't get a chance to watch him and Rafa live. there's no debate about Djoker being the undisputed best on planet Earth right now, but taking down all the other members of the big 3 in succession to complete his career slam would vault him to another level in the hall of fame.

So, no Raonic and Genie likely to get bounced in the first or second round again.
From a Canadian perspective, this year's French Open is going to be a throwback to... most of our tennis history.

And from a Calgarypuck perspective, this year's French Open is going to be a throwback to...the tumbleweed ghost town thread of every year other than 2014.
hopefully I can be proven wrong!
