Even though it was a misdemeanor, his wife also admitted it was not the first time he has hit her.

I'm no lawyer, how much does that play into it?

That's like voluntarily leaving a club moments before the bouncer tosses you out on your ear.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Now we'll see what the Kings do with Voynov's contract. I suppose they could suspend him in order to retain his rights... We'll see

According to this article (which was written before the news of him going back to Russia),

http://www.latimes.com/sports/kings/...904-story.html

Voynov may be choosing self deportation so that he can re-apply for a visa later, instead of being stuck in US custody while deportation proceedings play out.

Kings Statement.
http://kings.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=779399

Quote:
On July 2, Slava Voynov entered a plea of no contest to domestic violence. Since that development, Mr. Voynov has been in the custody of the Seal Beach Detention Center and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. During this period of detention, the Los Angeles Kings decided he would no longer play for the team. The method by which we would ensure this outcome was something we carefully considered and we established a deadline of September 17 – the beginning of our 2015-16 training camp – to reach this outcome. Recently it became evident to us that our conclusion to this process would be to terminate Mr. Voynov’s Standard Player’s Contract. However, Mr. Voynov’s announcement today of his intention to leave the United States and return to Russia makes the termination unnecessary.
Basically the Kings claim they had already decided they would have terminated Voynov's contract, but with his leaving the termination is no longer necesscary

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
So as I speculated earlier, the play would appear to be to suspend Voynov and retain his NHL rights while he's gone to Russia

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
By retaining his rights, he becomes an asset for LA to trade one day; mind you, Voynov would still face NHL discipline if he ever returned

Mute point but I'm sure some will say they never intended to do that but since he's already leaving they can say they never intended on having him play for the Kings again

Good riddance. At least now if he repeats his behavior he'll hopefully end up in a Russian gulag for a while rather than a 45 day stay in some North American summer camp for millionaire athletes.
