If someone is willing to pay full freight for an arena and there are wealthy guys willing to throw money at it... the NHL would likely be willing to throw a team in the Yukon... so Las Vegas will happen if both of those criteria are met.

Quebec city is building an arena and there are wealthy guys willing to throw money at it.
It would be absolutely shameful if the NHL chooses Las Vegas over QC.

I'm not confident about the viability of a team in Quebec. Actually, none of the present options seem like much of a good bet. The only place I think would be a really good place is southern Ontario.
NHL-let's go to Vegas we're so smart. Hockey in the desert works.
In business sometimes it pays to be the first one into a new market.
It could just as easily crash and burn, but it may succeed and they would have a professional sports monopoly in a town where the streets flow with cash.
Its a risk, but I'd bet a team in Vegas would make more money than some already established NHL teams.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
My guess is the team will do well...or at least well enough. Owners (Maloof's) with much deeper pockets, a business presence in Vegas already, who have owned a pro sports team before (Sacramento Kings)...and the NHL being the first testing grounds for the money maker that they really covet....a NBA franchise in Vegas.
So with the said, my guess is that these guys will show that they can run a successful team and promote it in that market, while dispelling the stigma of gambling/pro sports in Vegas isn't the boogeymoster as the leagues haves aid all along...all with the intention, that their proof of successful operations of a decent NHL team in that market, means that then get in at the ground floor for the bigger prize. That is, in 3-5 years, convince the NBA to get a team into Vegas and in that arena.

Yeah, wealthy guys alright.Every man, woman and child in Alberta and BC
will be paying for that new arena being built in QC,what do you think the chances of anyone out here getting thrown a free ticket or two for their contribution...

I don't know, I could see a Vegas market having similar problems to Florida, as in, do you want to be the one sucker in the building who actually bought a ticket when you know that the other 3999 people there got their tickets for free?

The Maloofs were universally recognized as one of the worst ownership groups in NBA history, so if the NHL is getting into business with them there's no potential of a team in Vegas being a disaster, it's a guarantee.

What, you really want free tickets to a Nordiques 2.0 game 3~ years in the future? Because of some perceived injustice about provincial equalization payments? One against the Flames, or is any opponent fine? Are they covering our airfare?

This is the NHL we're talking about. They'd fit in well with other criminals like Boots, Spano, and Pocklington
If they had a team here, I would think they would need to offer more unique ticket packages. Season tickets for the casinos and locals, but then offer Sun-Wed season tickets to the locals who are industry? Then they can sell the weekend games to vacation companies and the weekend crowd?

All sides are denying it's anything close to being official (or are just avoiding comment altogether), but we're hearing that the possibility of an NHL team for Vegas is legit enough that ESPN is capturing the journey for posterity.
Word has it that a 30 for 30 program, ESPN's Emmy-nominated documentary series, is being developed to chronicle the arrival of Vegas' first professional hockey team. A tipster tells us filming is already underway with the Maloof family who are, along with businessman William Foley, reportedly part of an ownership group seeking to bring the NHL to LAS. (The Maloofs are best known for having brought us the Palms and for once owning the Sacramento Kings.) Rumblings say the series will be titled, "Birth of a Franchise."

I think he was just taking a crack at the attitude of entitled dependance on the government in Quebec. Or you could take it literally
Since then, the talk has only ramped up. As recently as last week, it was suggested to me the NHL will, at some point in the very near future, bestow a conditional expansion franchise to an ownership group in Las Vegas. That is, if certain requirements (including selling a designated number of season tickets) are met, an NHL franchise could be operational in Vegas as early as the fall of 2016.
I just straight up don't get the rational behind Vegas. The NHL as a whole can't compete against against NBA/MLB/NFL in many markets, and they think they can trump a dozen Cirque du Soleil shows, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion, Brittany Spears for entertainment dollars?
Even if we say an MGM is throwing money at the team hand over foot for every seat, the fact is empty seats don't buy beer/food/merchandise.
