I don't think people purposely park beside a car to be an ahole. I think a lot of times, they're subconsciously using the other car as a guide for the parking spot. It's probably easier to judge the spot than focus on the the lines. I notice this happens quite a bit for people who aren't that good at parking. They probably pulled in without even thinking of the fact that there's a reason why someone parked further out and away from other vehicles. In their mind, they're probably thinking it's because that person is a crappy parker too and needed the extra room.

This is exactly what I'm saying!!
And I actually prefer to have a vehicle on my right as a guide, not to leave space for myself to get out but because it seems easier to judge my turning radius that way, vs having a vehicle on my drivers side and trying to angle it correctly to get myself into the spot.

I'm terrified to ask - how bad at parallel parking are these people who can't even park in a stall without another car to guide them in?

The only reason I prefer more open parking spots is because my vehicle is large and I'm not that good at parking. It's not because I feel entitled to the extra space to open my door and get out. I've hit vehicles by accident in parking lots before and I'd prefer to not do that again. So... Yeah. I do actually think I'm being courteous by actively trying to mitigate hitting other vehicles.

Why exactly are you driving a large vehicle? It doesn't look like you are very competent.

Yeah... I never really had trouble using those yellows lines they usually put down.

I'm not *that* bad. I've had an illustrious 16 year driving career, with two parking lot incidents, one speeding ticket, and that's it. Just giving some reasons other than windbreak and being an a-hole that someone might park beside someone else.
And if you can fit two rear facing carseats, a booster seat, and a stroller and a 70-pound dog into a Fiat, well, I'd be happy to see how you did it.

People who choose to park their vehichles at a distance from all others have a reason, whatever it may be. A dog in the car, saftey, inexperienced/ new driver, "car guy". A real DB would be the one who goes out of their way to park next to car parked far away. My neighboor who is 65 ish told me while at the bank he parked his Caddy 2 rows back and 8 spots over from the nearest car. When he came out, there was someone pasrked right next to him, so he spit a huge loogie on their windshield. I laughed and told him someone parking that far away was likely an employee, he said he didn't "really care"
If I'm in my work truck (which is huge) I try to park where I have the best in and out access from the lot to the street, doesnt matter how long the walk is really, and we have a pull through, back in parking policy. In the wifes little car I George Costanza it.

I am sometimes guilty of parking next to someone who is parked by themselves because they way I see it he values his vehicle, so is going to be more careful as not to ding my vehicle.

It's not that they can't, it's just easier with a car there. Like I said, a lot of times its just a natural reaction. You crank the wheel into a spot that has another car parked there as a guide. Heck, I sometimes do it subconciously at the Can Tire parking lot, where there's usually a ton of spaces in the parking lot, but I just naturally pull into a spot in between two cars because it's easy as heck to do so.

I'm not quite understanding. Guiding yourself into a spot based on two yellow lines is exactly the same as guiding yourself into a spot based on two cars on either side, no?
If anything going by the lines with no cars around is actually easier because you can be a little more careless and come in a little faster as you can go over the lines a bit and then correct to a perfect position by the time you're fully pulled in.

I dunno, it's just laziness on my part. I don't know how to quite explain it. Like honestly, sometimes my mind is on autopilot, and I see a spot between two cars and I just pull into it.
I'm not saying I'm a bad parker (because I'm not, since my tiny civic fits in almost any spot anyways). It's just I do notice sometimes I needlessly pull beside a car in a parking lot, even if there were a couple other free spots I could have pulled into without cars beside them.

Hmm, yeah definitely weird to me. I'm lazy too, but my version of lazy and "auto pilot" is carelessly pulling into an open area with the only skill and thought put in being that I eventually end up between two yellow lines.
Does anyone else ever do this one? You pull into an open area and just kind of decide on the go which spot to go in, and sometimes even change it up last second? I know that's probably weird, but I'm weird, what are you gonna do?
