I am super excited to see this new brand of trucluence hit the ice and the oilers next season.
I didn't know where to ask this, but could a capologist tell me if it is possible to renegotiate with Giordano, to reduce his cap hit in a few years time?

I like this signing
Cap hit is irrelevant over the next three years. Toughness, leadership, retribution, example setting all worth hitting the cap floor.
At this stage of a team's development cycle were paying good money just for that, development. As valuable as points from vacuous mercenaries all for the sake of keeping up appearances for only the most impatient unthinking fans.

We didnt sign Cammy to a 5 for 5 today or Stralman or Orpik. We did no damage to our future team, we added a neccessary piece today.
This contract accomplished its goal. The numbers dont matter on it. We used one asset that we have that other teams dont. Cap Space. If we were not signing guys because they have too big of a cap hit over the next 2 to 3 years that is a waste of an asset.
Paying Cammy 8 million per for the next two seasons would have been fine but doing the New Jersey deal would have been terrible.

Just looking at other boards, it seems the Pens fans like the player but are a bit baffled by the AAV. If we're getting a good player and we're not a cap team in the next 3 years, I don't have a problem with it. 6 goals is not bad for a defenseman but it also seems like he played some forward too?

It doesn't work that way.
Ticket prices would be the same next year regardless + they had to get to the cap floor anyways. I guess you could have given byron 2.9 M, but that is not really the best use of money either.

Just watching his fights on YouTube, he rarely loses. There are some draws, but he can really throw 'em. This guy's going to be a monster for 6 to 10 minutes per night.

I'm not surprised that Mr Opposite likes this at all.
It's not a big deal, but it's a huge overpayment.
Edit: I do agree with Tinordi, just meant he seems to enjoy playing Devils advocate.

Looks like he averaged a little over 13 minutes a game with the Pens. Probably closer to 15 on our team.

I don't really know much about the player, but I know he makes us tougher to play against. I was a bit shocked to see nearly $3 million devoted to a 6th defenceman, but at the moment it doesn't matter at all to our cap situation.
Seems like a huge upgrade on S.O.B. anyway... Welcome to the Flames!

I have nothing really to add to this, other than Engelland was from my home town, and from all accounts is a good guy.

After seeing what all the D signed for today, it's a tiny bit better. Thank goodness it's not longer than 3 years.

These are the kinds of moves the Oilers were making 3-4 years ago.
Hire a whole bunch of face punchers to "Shelter" the kids.
In reality it forced the kids into bigger roles as the face punchers can't play more 10 minutes a night without getting lit up.

Don't believe so. I don't think that contracts can be renegotiated under the new CBA. Someone else can confirm through?

No renegotiation allowed at all. They can sign him to an extension in the last year of his contract but the new cap hit doesn't take effect until that contract takes effect.

Except that the Flames face punchers in Big Ern Bollig and Engelland can all be on the ice and not hurt the team and assume a role.
Edmonton signed morons like Stortini etc who had absolutely no on ice talent at all.

No, your complete lack of any talent at the top end is what pushed your kids into roles they were not ready for. Like the Oilers themselves, you have no clue what "shelter" actually means. We can shelter Monahan and we don't have to rush Bennett because we have Backlund and Stajan. We can shelter kids like Wotherspoon because we have Giordano, Brodie, Wideman, Russell.
A guy like Engelland isn't brought in to "shelter" anyone. He's brought in to be a mean, physical presence on the blue line

Also, Stortini couldn't punch faces.

I'm confused... Giordano will be UFA in a few years time. 2016-17
