How will we make cap floor then? Acquire contracts in trades I suppose.

No thanks. Callahan is going into Clarkson territory this summer, except more dollars.

Callahan still competes quite hard. Clarkson is no good.

did you quote the wrong guy? I was talking about Seto and alberta guys in general.

I must comment though, "one bad season and you trade him for a bag of pucks?"

you realize Iggy was a UFA and didn't want to play here anymore, if Iggy wanted to sign an extension he would still be here. Its not like the Flames pushed him out the door, guy wants to win and is picking and choosing the team(s) that give him the best shot

Do you guys have any interest in McQuaid, Fayne, or Brookbank? Just looking for players that could fill in the 5/6 role with a RH shot. Boychuk could also be in the mix if the Bruins are looking shed cap space, especially if they want Iggy to come back.

Iginla in Boston is a good 200ft player, looks like he realized that in order to continue having a carrier required attitude adjustment.
Iginla in Calgary last couple of years was floating, couldn't win a puck battle and refused to back-check. He was a great Flame, but years of disappointments coupled with an idiot coach in Sutter took the fire out of him.
Change of scenery was required for Iginla and Flames needed a fresh start.
Time to move on.

Totally agree. Love Iggy but don't want him back here for anything other than a one day contract when he's ready to retire.

With Treliving as the new GM, here are some current and former Coyotes that are UFA this summer I could see the Flames looking at:

D - Chris Summers 6'2" 209lbs shoots left 26 yrs old
http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/...layer.php?5711

G - Chad Johnson 6'3" 195lbs 27 yrs old
http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/...layer.php?5851

G - Thomas Greiss 6'1" 215 28 yrs old
http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/...layer.php?4602

G - Al Montoya 6'2" 203 lbs 29 yrs old
http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/...layer.php?4706

C - Andy Miele 5'9" 180 lbs shoots left 26 yrs old

I think the Vrbata option just became a lot more real with our new GM. As long as we can sign him for only 2-3 years, I think that he would be a great stop gap on RW... until we develop someone internally that is. We can make a team from the Czech Olympic outcasts

I would like Greiss as a backup. Have seen him play quite a few games down here and he is probably the best backup goalie you can have. Always seems to up his game when he has to and can fill in when Ramo is injured/sick for a couple of games. It's not like he just started becoming a good backup, he was still a solid backup for Nabokov in his San Jose days.

although it's never going to happen, I would kill for us to get Boychuk...he's an absolute monster!

i just don't see many UFAs lining up to play for the flames. The only UFA possibilities i see are mid-range player projects who have diminshed their value but looking for a chance for ice time to redeem their NHL stock. Someone like penner, though not him exactly, as i still think middle of the pack teams would look to him as 2nd line scoring potential.

Wouldn't mind a guy like kulemin, if they can get him at the right price, which is the price of a 3rd line RW.

I think the team has 2 real needs at this stage:
1) A proven point getter to play on the top line/top 6 (ie. cammalleri or his replacement). Issue is, 29 other teams also have "get a proven scorer" on their wishlist come Jul 1. I actually think the flames will fail to land this.

2) A top 4 dman. Gio-brodie, wideman -?, russel-smid. I'm happy with this 6, though, we do need a guy to be able to take that top4 role. Yes, butler was left off, but that is because i feel he/smid should compete for the bottom pairing spot.

I think it is important the flames take this year patiently and don't get sucked into looking for immediate results. It would actually be good if the flames stay patient with the kids, and leave players at the level that is best for their development (leaving picks in juniour/AHL), hopefully improving to a top10 drafting team, though if there's ever a year to get back into the top5 again it's next draft.

I actually do think the flames get back into the top5 unfortunately next season. No cammalleri, monahan due for a bit of a sophmore slump, gio maybe coming back to earth a bit after a sensational year, and ramo having an up and down season as the go-to NHL starter.

Cross out Jagr, wants to play with the Devils for another season. No surprise there.

I really want Jaromir Jagr (like a few others) for all sorts of crazy (probably non-nonsensical) reasons. Mainly, I want him to teach the kids via example.

1. His work ethic is off the charts. (Fits with culture + extends/adds to it?)
2. It would be cool for the young kids to see a living legend (morale?)
3. Have the kids to learn from him skill/attitude (also adds to #1)
3. His size would bring a "sort of" enforcer to the team which may help the kids avoid being flattened. (At almost the size of McGrattan. Jagr doesn't have to fight. Give him a perma playoff beard + mullet and no one will bully the kids in fear of Big Ern or the Wolverine... Czech-mate?)
4. His mercenary mode would be an interesting "culture addition" to the locker room. (Kids won't take things for granted seeing a veteran fighting for their spot day after day. Again see #1)

Misc:
- Have the guy train Colborne and Monahan? I'm sure Colborne/Monahan could learn a lot just watching Jagr up close and training with him.
- Heck, play him with Paul Byron then make up the Chihuahua and the grey wolf jokes for all I care. It's all entertaining.
- He's a guy who plays physical and has a big game? (That's still the case, right?)
- He's trying to increase his output, same as most kids. (Conflicts?)
- RW would be useful? (Line shuffles to accommodate hime)
- As a merc, I feel like he would want a solid role and sure, we can give him one. He feels like a guy who would respect the other players and roles the others hold. He knows he's not going to be a face of the franchise or the savior of the team. He just wants to plug in and play somewhere he can play well. (He doesn't seem like an overpowering alpha or prima donna.)
- He might like the Canadian market? (Plus I believe we have some of the best fans in the whole league)
- Short term contract means growing him out of the line up (growing the kids into the roles) is a natural progression.

I seriously just want him as a rent-a-teacher to the kids, protection and for entertainment value. Plus, I think he would fit in here with mere minor adjustments. I really don't mind the idea of him being here short term and I even think it's great having it that way if we're a rebuild team.

If we can't get him though, I'm not sure if he would still be a good fit in subsequent years. He feels like a good fit now.
