I might have to change my position then.

Seems like utter capitulation on the part of some republicans.

Perhaps part of the excising of the Tea Party element.

Would that accomplish much though? If the debt limit is a non-issue then shutting the government down effectively does nothing. Of course after the past 10 days or so they accomplished nothing and still managed to fight for that long!

Make their voter base happy I guess? "Hey look we're shutting down all this government spending!"

I guess a house stenographer took the opportunity to grab the mic. Lol...

This guy is amusing as well:

http://gawker.com/tea-party-republic...-op-1446552792

A Tea Party candidate for Idaho's House of Representatives defended himself against allegations of hypocrisy following an NBC News article in which he admitted to signing his entire family up for Medicaid while running on a platform that calls for the dismantling of all government programs.

Or, as Opposing Views helpfully summarizes[I]: "t is okay to take part in programs one opposes as long as one does not 'support' those programs."

Tea party is hilarious, I don't understand what the point of the whole government shutdown was after all this. In theory they were going to force concessions out of the Democrats, but what they got was a provision that was a prior ACA requirement (you are right Photon), to furnish qualifying proof before being granted insurance, before scrapped due to implementation problems in July.

So... Obamacare is not repealed, no defunded or delayed. Medical device tax not repealed, individual mandates not delayed, government is funded to the levels the Democrats wanted in the first place and there is no longer any default. Out of all of this the GOP killed themselves in the polls and managed to piss off most Americans and they are heading for a loss in Virginia. GG Tea party.

^ The only positive out of this is that Boehner may now have the opportunity to show some balls against the Tea Party and possibly bring them in line. But I doubt it.

If he does, he won't have the job anymore because right now the Republican party is in control of the Tea Party, because they have the financial backing. Honestly, as much as he looks like he caused the whole issue, he is a victim in this as much as the rest of the country.

Privately, I bet he is hoping the crazy will go away soon enough that he can stay in his role and keep working on his career.

So the damage is in, the shutdown cost markets $24+ billion dollars for basically no appreciable return. This is for the US market only and doesn't include the market roller coaster the rest of the world had to deal with.
http://www.masslive.com/politics/ind...glad_gove.html

Isn't the deal only for 2-3 months? Won't this be another issue again after Christmas.

The proposal to flip the question - Congress votes to DENY debt ceiling increases in future instead of having to approve them all - is interesting. You can just see Congress passing that vote, fully secure in the reality that the President will veto it, just so they can campaign to stupid people that they tried to reign in spending and put a stop to this national debt run-up, but the evil President wouldn't let them.

Obama wouldn't have to veto it unless the House and the Senate pass it. Senate Republicans aren't as crazy as House Republicans.

I wouldn't necessarily say that Senate Republicans are less crazy than their Congressional counterparts, they just don't have to worry about being primaried every 2 years like Congressional Republicans. Cause if you think the bunch they got in there now is bat####, just remember they have even more bat#### crazy people waiting in the wings to take their place.

The Republicans are dead as a viable political party until this changes. Old people and religious fanatics are the most passionate voting groups, and they show up to vote. When you have to win these people's votes just to actually be eligible to be considered by the general populace, your party is going to be a disaster. The only reason they even have the House is because of gerrymandering.

I can't help but think that the U.S. would really benefit from a multi-party system (i.e. more than 2). The polarization with 2 parties is ridiculous there now.

Anyone else catch Kelly Ayotte (R) NH comments on the Senate floor yesterday? She's a keeper. We need more vocal outrage from Republicans like her.

I wonder how popular a party like the current Republican party would be in Canada,
I'd guess less than Doug Hennings flying carpet party
