Funny you should mention the Yuuzhan Vong. The New Jedi Order is kind of when I gave up on the EU.

ummm...oh I know, Q snaps his fingers and turns Palpatine into a Baconator with a side of onion rings.
come to think of it, that's the funny imbalance between the two series. Star Wars has all this outlandish technology on a massive scale. Supposedly a run of the mill star destroyer has the energy output equal to that of an average star...sooo you need a death star to destroy planets because why? but then the most powerful beings are jedi/sith, who are limited to various minor tricks such as telekinesis/telepathy.
then on the Trek side, the ships are more conservative and sort of based on extrapolations of known physics but there's more than a few complete or near omnipotent races and beings. that's made for both some of the best stories, as well as the silliest ones once you start thinking about what wielding that kind of power really means.

If Deadliest Warrior has taught me anything, it is that the newer technology always wins. Therefore, i take Star Date 254379.7 over "Long Time Ago....".
(but apart of me hates saying that, so i have to say the deadliest warrior would have to account for The Force" which would counter the effect of any technology).

I'm not sure if this has been posted but it looks like that not only will there be the 3 episode trilogy by Abrams but there is also going to be standalone movies following other characters in the Star Wars universe not directed by Abrams.
Quote:
Disney CEO Bob Iger has now confirmed that Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan and Sherlock Holmes and X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg are indeed working on new Star Wars movies that will stand apart from the trilogy J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt are kicking off with Episode VII. Here's how Iger explains Kasdan and Kinberg's brief:
[They're] working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga, so we still plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX roughtly over a six year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time, too.
|
So lots of Star Wars in the next few years it looks like. Thoughts on what characters the films might follow?

The rumor going around yesterday was that Kasdan's is going to be about Yoda.

Looks like they're doing a reverse Avengers sort of thing. Why not though, if executed properly they could be excellent movies.
I can picture it now. Shia LeBoeuf as a young Han Solo.
Just kidding. Please don't lynch me!

Origin stories of some of the characters would be cool
Send Yoda off to fight pirates as a young Padawan
Have Mace Windu chasing down a Jedi that fell to the darkside
Han Solo's meeting up with Chewie
Jar Jar Binks accidentally wandering into the China town district on Naboo and being slowly cooked and eaten over a three hour span.
Palpatine at the point where he finishes his training and kills his Master and sets himself on the path to domination
A movie about Jeb Porkins that ends when he gets blasted
A movie about the storm trooper who bangs his head in SW
A movie about the rise of Tarkin

Origins movies would be great.. and who better to play a young Harrison Ford than the freshly out of retirement Arnold Shwarzenegger!
"Chewie, get to the falcon!"

Just no fracking Bobba Fet origin movies.
Robot Chicken has already done a good enough job of that.

As a serious thought, what about the guy that played the main nemesis fighter in Goon Liev Schreiber?
He's a pretty solid actor and with makeup could look like a young Han Solo

Lucas thoroughly ruined Boba Fett already.
An origin of Han and Chewie would be my bet for the first one. Han was totally absent from the prequels and he's a crowd favorite. Would be the story of him winning the falcon and doing the Kessel run in 12 parsecs.

I think the better story would be the recruitment and training of Han by the Empire and how he threw his career away by freeing Wookie Slaves.
Seeing Han Solo in a tie fighter would be nerdtastic

Ugh, Han Solo was what made Star Wars movies great. Without him, they would have just been good sci fi movies. But Harrison Ford was born for Han Solo, and Indy and anyone else trying to recapture that is just going to make everyone cringe.

I think it's safe to say that there's a very high probability that Han Solo will be in the new movie. They really haven't squeezed any water from that stone yet.

how about some movies without the original main characters? the big problem, especially with prequels, is that we know exactly who's going to make it through unscathed. if we see a young han solo in a fight for his life, who's really going to be on the edge of their seat knowing that he's going to be just fine nomatter what?
there's plenty of great screenwriters out there, let them come up with something really fresh an unexpected. we've already seen what happens when you rely on retreads of characters.

My feeling is that based on how gigantic an f'up the prequels were, Disney's going to be circling the wagons around some of the tried and true to build up the brand again. They'll go safe with the first movie for sure then branch out. If the first movie is a bunch of new characters and timelines they risk alienating the casual fan which is where the real money is at.

Agreed. Just say no to prequels. I would also rather see new characters than see old ones return. No one can make a better Han Solo than Ford so why ruin the character. I've always enjoyed the space combat of Star Wars so I would really love to see a trilogy focus on Wedge and Rogue Squadron as they fight what's left of the Empire. I'd also be totally onboard with an Old Republic movie or trilogy following Revan.
I wouldn't mind seeing a Boba Fett movie provided they A) Get rid of that stupid accent B) Don't make it an origin story. Maybe they could return Boba Fett to his original bad-ass self.

Depending on how the clone wars sequels go and what happens with the live action T.v. series that Disney has green lighted.
A bridge movie involving Jedi fleeing from order 66 would be fairly cool.
You could also make movies about back ground characters
Aurra Singh (sp?) showed up for 2 seconds in Phantom Menace but she has become a fairly cool character.
A movie showing the transition of clone troopers and Republic officers to the New Order could be a dynamite concept.
You could make a very dark movie about the crushing of Naboo and the start of the Rebellion if you wanted to as well.
I'm still a fan of the idea of an old republic movie too.

I actually really liked the Republic/Imperial Commando novels. Movies centering around Delta/Omega squad would be cool.
Actually, they could also make a movie based on the Force Unleashed. They've already got the actor to play Starkiller and it was pretty interesting.
