The only version of hockey that will be realistic is actually playing hockey. No video game is going to have the same intangibles that playing a real game of hockey has, and I'm ok with that.

I really like what they have done with NHL this year and it looks very good. All sports games will always have an arcadey feel too them, they aren't meant to be a true simulation of the sport; If they were the game would be too frustrating to play. I don't think people would enjoy the 82 games grinding it out playing a perfect version of hockey, look at how much you invest into just watching the 82 games. These sports video games do need to have arcadey elements to them or they wouldn't be fun to play for a huge amount of people.
first off, i dont think you came across ######y even though i think the point is a bit of a cop out.

there are lots of people that enjoy a more authentic experience. and they could easily provide that. they could refine the gameplay to require a more gritty style of play. and i do think there is a market of people that would enjoy it. there are lots of us that play offline modes like GM and generally spend all year trying to tweak the game to be more realistic. myself, when i play gm mode, i play every game for both teams. it means hundreds of games each year in offline mode as i usually play a couple seasons. and i love it. several of my good friends do the same.

sure i know its not for everyone; i would be willing to bet the entire province of quebec would quit playing if they lost their superstar dangler/sniper/speedster/big hitter that can do every skill at an elite level, but some of us would like it.

and they certainly could do a better job at mucking up the game. the only reason people continue to glitch the game is because they can. people cross crease all day long because its super easy to pass through 8 guys in the slot. the only style you need to play to win in this game is the figure skating dangler style because it works. and it works way too well.

THIS is a more accurate representation of hockey? (Warning - the music is loud and horrible)

For the first time in years, I am actually excited about the annual release.

If all these features and improvements work out at least half as good as promised then this might be a fantastic game to play.

I loved Ice Hockey. Played it for hours last Christmas with my bro.

I like NHL games for creating custom teams in random ass places and then subbing them in. NHL has done just about the worst job possible for changing the logos or cities or any of that crap for custom teams.

If it's the same G D selection set I'll probably return the game. Also, I despise how EA takes functionality out, only to return it a few years later at such a blatant cash grab. It's annoying. My friend used to work for them, would always muse about how they had all these great ideas each year, but rarely are many incorporated because they want to save them for future releases.

BS.

Especially how cities like Sault Ste Marie, Parry Sound, etc, aren't available for selection for players and teams, though my Greyhounds are in the game, not to mention that Gretzky came through here during his junior tenure, and that the Espositos, Turco, Francis, were born here, and more recent players even like Kennedy came out of here.

It's like the dev team doesn't know anything about hockey.

Based on the most recent video I'm sold. I skipped NHL12 but I won't say I wasn't tempted at times, but that last video just makes it look so damn slick I'm ready to open the wallet for an upgrade.

The problem with making a completely realistic NHL simulation is an NHL team scores a goal about every 20 minutes of game play. I don't know too many people that can sit down and play a single game for ~1.5 hours (game play plus stoppage time, highlights etc), especially not online where you can't exactly drop the controller for a poop break.

Hot damn that is impressive. I skip the junior games just for the sake of time, but I usually get about 3 seasons in each year. I would love it if this year had an option to say at the beginning "I do/do not want to play all the games for both leagues". The number of times you have to go through the "are you sure you want to sim your junior game", and then the "are you SURE?" menu is obnoxious imo.

I generally dial down to 12 minutes/period (extended to 15-17 based on how many whistles I get. There's far too few). With a little tweaking, you get about 30-35 shots against/game (I can't tell you how many shots for you normally get. I have a "throw everything at the net" strategy that racks up 50-60 with a 4-5% scoring %)

Same. I micromanage strategy to even the most minute things and try to get a "real" feel to the game.

The killer so far is always the AI for Be a GM. In-game AI isn't horrible, but agents who demands long term max salary contracts and GMs who let go of great young players for nothing have to go.

yeah, i dont have kids, so i can still game ridiculous amounts of time!

i play 7 minute periods and feel that i get a decent amount of chances. i dont play on the top skill i play the 2nd (i think allstar) so i usually score 3-5 goals a game. i am sure if i wanted more modern hockey with less goals i could just up it to the top level. but then again that would probably mean my controller breaking my tv!

and i'm not saying nhl should be a straight simulation either in game or in gm mode. but what i am saying is that there is a balance between realism and arcadism. for almost the entire series its always trended towards arcadism. i would love for EA to tone is down some more. i think it would make for a better game if they did.

You guys are crazy, I play 5 minute periods and I always get a lot of goals. My shooting percentage is around 20%. Not sure how you could win with a 4-5%.

Some pretty slick stuff in here, including a new camera angle and menu style.

What do you set the sliders and everything at? and what level are you playing on? I have been forever trying to get the cpu out of the 4-8 shots a period type thing resulting in only getting like 15-20 shots a game...

Just a heads up to anyone getting NHL 13:

EB Games has a pretty decent deal on right now. 30% additional trade credit towards the pre-order of NHL 13. Today I traded in NHL 12 and the credit they gave me was $17 plus 30% more for a total of $22.

I highly suggest everyone takes advantage of this right now. Especially since the demo comes out in about a week and no one will be playing NHL 12 anyways.

DO IT!

I think it was lifted from another site. The only things I can remember at the moment is maxed attribute effects, high AI aggression, low passing, low game speed, and low checking. Difficulty was whatever the default All-Star I think.

Bear in mind though that I am really aggressive in playing. My team collapses and I use my player to chase the puck down.

I'll have to check sometime.

Awesome! I've been waiting for something like this specifically. I have two games left in my season. Looks like I may have to marathon through my playoffs and get in on that deal.
