Best episode of maybe the best season of Mad Men thus far?
Best episode of the series tonight though.
I was worse than lukewarm on this show through the first 3 episodes of this season but now I'm firmly back on board. It's tackling things I really hoped we'd see in the final seasons of the show.
Decline of American as a background to chaotic Don Draper. Good stuff.

That was one of those classic all time shock Mad Men moments along the lines of the lawn mower incident.

That was a truly great shock moment. It was unexpected and they didn't cop out on us and put it at the end of the episode. We got to see some fallout and reaction too. Of all the things that could have brought Don Draper crashing to the earth so far during this series, this could be the one thing he can't recover from.

I found it shocking as well, but if you look back, it probably shouldn't have been. Don just did Sylvia a favor and had a moment on the phone. Sally grabs the keys to their place. It's right there.
Again, I was stunned by it and went "Oh shhhhhiii" when it happened, but I probably should have seen it coming.

I saw it coming, but I was surprised that Don wasn't more serious about covering his tracks when he came home that evening- I thought he would have tried harder to talk to his kid about it.
Weird to think that Sally is about the same age as my parents...

As soon as no one answered the door when Sally knocked I figured that Sylvia was busy with Don and Sally would catch them. Why else would they have Sally sneak into their apartment? If they were trying to trick the viewer into thinking she'd catch them together they'd have told us that Don was there.

Well I thought they just killed him off, in the end, he didn't even lose the eye. Not so shocking.
The most shocking part of the episode (not surprising, but shocking) was Sally dropping "My father hasn't given me anything"

"In the season 6 finale, Don has a problem."

They just left us hanging about Ken for what felt like forever. But yes, the Sally comment was interesting. In many ways a major theme of the show has been the damage that the American Masculine Ideal has done to the relationships of Don et al. Perhaps the most damaging example of this Sally Draper.

I've been saying it since I started watching the show... the most intriguing character throughout it's run has been Sally Draper.

The Mad Men movie will be a cross over with In Treatment and have Gabriel Byrne being Sally's therapist.

This season started out kind of rough, but it ended amazingly. The 'Going Down' comment when Duck brings up the other Creative Director might have been heavy handed, but I'm just nitpicking. What a finale!

Yeah, I was on the ropes with the show after I guess episode 3. Things really accelerated from there.
I loved the simplicity of the scene after he stops drinking and Ted tells him you can't just stop.
Sure enough, Don stops drinking and look what comes flooding out: Decades of repressed emotions. Really powerfully done monologue.

I didn't even know there was only one season remaining for Mad Men... I don't think I like this new trend of splitting the final season into 2 mini seasons.

ALL ABOARD!

It usually means you get a few extra episodes so I don't mind the split season. It also usually means one extra "finale" style episode that ramps things up.

Bump. Season 7 is two episodes in and no comments yet?
Pretty good episode last night IMO. Sadly, the ratings took a hit on the opener- and I think that the fact they are splitting the final season isn't two half-seasons is partly to blame. I guess Game of Thrones is the other, bigger, reason.
