So she suggested that we arrange for grandma to babysit for a night and cash in some air miles and go somewhere for a quick getaway.

Splendid idea - how about August 11-12 in Vancouver? Oh look at that... the Whitecaps play Real Salt Lake on the 11th. Done. Although she's not a big sports fan when things are on TV, she genuinely enjoys seeing sports live (especially hockey and soccer, fittingly), so she's fully on board with my plan. The only downside is that the only available flight departs Calgary at 7:00am, which will mean a very early morning. But we'll get nearly two full days in Vancouver, a Whitecaps game, and only need to be away for one night.
haha....great stream of consciousness!!! Grandparents are wonderful and it seems your priorities are spot on....that is to include your wife with one of your passions.

Sounders winless in 9 but unbeaten in last 3. Wins will come. They were unlucky not to win in New England on Sunday and a draw with RSL is a decent outcome.

just watched a highly entertaining game between Seattle and Colorado. MLS needs to showcase great soccer markets like Seattle more. It made watching the game that much more entertaining.

I'm happy to see that Steve Zakuani was back on the field tonight. That leg break last year was pretty nasty.

The Timbers road woes continue, 3-0 loss to RSL with no shots on goal. Thankfully, I'll be watching them at home vs. LA Galaxy next weekend. I can't wait!

Coach John Spencer was fired in Portland today. No surprise at all after the Cal FC debacle, as well as showing their ass on the road the past two weekends.

I think I'm actually a bit more excited to be at the match this weekend, as the team "playing for each other" after a firing usually plays well.

Ha Ha Stupid Whitecaps.

Great ending to the TFC - Whitecaps match 3-2 TFC with Vancouver equalizing in extra time and then TFC taking the lead back with the final touch of the ball.

The Whitecaps transferred Davide Chiumiento back to Switzerland as well. Big blow but maybe freeing up space for a signing.

Wish the Caps would put a Canadian or two in their starting lineup... I want to care and cheer for them so bad being in BC but I just have no attachment to their roster at all.

Sounders win 4-1 in Open Cup action against Chivas tonight. They tie a record 4th consecutive US Open Cup final against Sporting KC in August.

I can't really fault them. They are a professional club and it is their duty to assemble a squad that will get results. As there is a lack of professional quality players in this country they are going to have to seek them from abroad. Unfortunately, until they gain a strong enough financial foothold that will enable them to both adequately fund their academy and turn a profit those that jumped on the bandwagon will have to live with it.

Anyway, I watched the second half last night and although TFC had more chances throughout the match, I though the Whitecaps looked more fluid and organized with the ball.

The unfortunate thing is that they are in a playoff spot without those Canadians in the lineup.

On the other end of the spectrum, TFC have 4 regular starters in their lineup (Henry, Morgan, Dunfield, de Guzman) and they are the worst team in the league.

It sort of reminds me of reading, following Norwich vs. Manchester City this past season, that Norwich fans sung to Milner and someone else something like "You're only subs because you're English" as they warmed up to enter the game, to which they apparently laughed.

Manchester City, of course, is famous for their number of non-English players, whereas Norwich have a few internationals sprinkled in among a fairly English lineup.

I personally (as a proud Canadian) don't have a problem with Vancouver's lack of Canadians on the roster. As Addick says, they've got to put the best team on the field and, as time goes on, hopefully they'll develop a system where young Canadians can move up through the ranks.

Another big move by Vancouver today, sending Sebastien Le Toux to NY for Jamaican int'l Dane Richards.

Ugh.. I cringe when I watch Dunfield on the ball in midfield. There have got to be better options for both TFC and Team Canada (although I didn't see him play the last few WC qualifiers)

I'd much rather watch a winning team then one with Canadians in the lineup. The Whitecaps have done an excellent job showing improvement this year.

The Le Toux trade is an interesting one. We now have someone with some actual speed to play down the wing, and Mattocks had made Le Toux somewhat expendable. We lost a good player, but hopefully the extra width will help us out in the long run.

The Timbers-Galaxy match right now is insane! It's 2-4 still in the first half! (TSN2)

Dane Richards looked quick up front for Vancouver. I'd need to see more of him, but the first look was good.

There are also rumours that the Whitecaps are pursuing Kenny Miller from Cardiff. That'll be interesting to see if it happens.

It was crazy! I still don't have much of a voice after that match. Obviously bummed that the Timbers lost, but that was one of the most entertaining matches I've ever seen.
