Are they going to put a finish/covering on the concrete or will that stay as is? Someone needs to get up there when it's done and take a 360 photo of the view. I'm sure it's amazing.

Might have been cool if they made it a mini-Calgary Tower.

Garth Atkinson is updating City Council on the airport projects this morning:
-New air traffic control tower (a NavCanada project) slated to open in May 2013
-Parallel runway on time/on budget for opening in May 2014. Pavement is more than 1/3 done
-their master plan is someday LRT is coming, either right into terminal or close by
-Wendelin Fraser appointed by the city to fill the vacant board position (next time Bigtime, next time)

Article in the Herald about the 2012 year:
Calgary International Airport hits record year for passengers
13.6 million in 2012 or 37,000 per day
CALGARY — For the first time in its history, the Calgary Airport Authority is reporting annual revenue exceeding $300 million in 2012 as a record was also set for the most passengers ever through the facility.
The Calgary International Airport saw 13.6 million passengers last year or 37,000 a day, the authority announced Thursday at its annual general meeting.
That was up from 12.8 million in 2011.
Revenue for the authority for 2012 was $308 million, increasing from $290 million in 2011.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new international terminal is scheduled to be completed by late 2015 and will double the size of the current terminal, adding two million square feet on five levels, with 22 aircraft gates and a 300-room hotel.
Atkinson said the shell of the new hotel is finished and the authority is “close” to announcing a partner in the project.
He said more than $800 million will be invested in the airport this year — the single-largest capital investment for any year in its history.
Randy Williams, president and chief executive of Tourism Calgary, said the airport is currently at capacity.
“The airport development is a game-changer for us,” he said. “It will open up doors to so much more access over the years.”
Atkinson also said the airport will be renumbering its runways this year because of a shift in the Earth’s magnetic field.

Will every other airport have to do the same then?

No. The mag pole moves slowly every year. Runways are based on magnetic heading. Currently runway 34 is around 343 degrees magnetic. As the pole shifts the magnetic heading of the runway will move closer to 350 degrees. They are renaming them 35L/R 17L/R.
They likely will stay as 35/17 for decades.

I'm surprised that it is still relatively close to 340 and they are making the change now. Do you think that the pending opening of the new runway has anything to do with it? Sort of future-proofing the runway numbering so they won't have to do this again for an even longer period of time?

Yes. It's heading towards 350. May as well call the new one 35R rather than come back in a few years and change everything. Amazing to see an airport being proactive for once!

I would assume 28/10 and 25/07 will change as well?

Some info about the runway renumbering from YYC:
http://www.calgaryairport.com/News/t...d-in-2013.aspx
"The new designation for Runway 16/34 will become 17/35, Runway 10/28 will become 11/29, and Runway 07/25 will be 08/26."

A further update from Skyscraperpage forumer AlbertanToo who just saw a presentation from the airport authority folks:
Quote:
Runway 07/25 will become Runway 08/26 on June 27/13
Runway 10/28 will become Runway 11/29 on August 22/ 13
Runway 16/34 will become Runway 17R/35L on October 17/13
Taxiway Romeo, which will tie in the existing network of taxiways to the new parallel runway, will begin being tied in between July 15th and September 15th. From the map in the presentation, it looks like there will be a good chance to get a photo of an aircraft taxiing over McCall Way once this taxiway overpass is in use!

I've heard from a local YYC tower controller that they will be transitioning to the new tower tonight. Here are some pics from up there:

Will there be any use for the old one anymore, or will it just be torn down?

It will have no use once the new one is fully up and running. I have heard that the airport authority is listening to some parties that want to re-purpose it, but keep in mind the best view up in the control cab is actually a very small area and wouldn't work for much besides observation (which I would gladly pay to use every now and then).

I know STARS was considering using it, but I think that's no longer on the table.

They should just let me have it to use as my own personal spotting space.
