And last year Mike Smith went on able absolute tear and won 8 games in April pretty much by himself. I guess that could happen again...
They also made the big coaching change and fearlessly were led by The Beaver in the second half, so he's going to do that for them again this year right? Right?
Get your yucks in now. After that game against the Canucks, we deserve them. But I’m not too sure I remember a team that won the cup in December. There is still much hockey to be played. Congrats to your flames for their win against the ducks.
First of all, we're not here to talk about the Flames, take a breath and take some time to really understand what this thread is all about.
But I'm going to play you.
The Flames haven't played well this year, and haven't had great chemistry so far. So if the Flames find chemistry, and the talent starts meeting the epectations, the Flames will leave the Oilers so far behind that Lassie will look down that well at the trapped Oilers and go "No amount of scooby snacks will make me save that train wreck of despair and failure."
And yes after all of the hype for the Oilers, and all of the talk of Woodhead being this amazing coach, the Oilers are again having to face reality. That team outside of Conna and Pissy would be hard pressed to make the playoffs in the AHL. Its really that bad, and the sooner Oiler fans realize it, the sooner they accept that, the sooner they can go about their rather sub ordinary lives filling up slurpee cups and sorting their sweat pants collection.
And you're right no team has won a cup in December, but a team that's out of the playoffs at Christmas is hard pressed to get in. The Oilers don't have their fate in their hands, and there's no help coming. Ok I'll correct that.
If the Oilers are willing to trade their razor thin futures, like their first round pick not lottery protected, a middling prospect like Holloway and a bust like Boberg or even maybe trade a one dimensional defenseman like Bouchard, maybe they can bring in some help. But the Oilers cap thanks to a very dim Holland is so bad that they might not be able to bring in that help.
I said for the last few years that if Holland had the balls, he'd trade one of the two wonder twins, he could get out of the cap problem. He could probably fix most of his terrible lineup, and pass a message to the other wonder twin that maybe they need to start playing a team game instead of an individual game that the Oilers might have a chance to succeed.
but as its looking now, last years little playoff run that ended with a crushing by the Avs was more about good fortune and luck then the Oilers actually being a team on the rise.

Old Woodchuck has to be on the firing block. He's been underwhelming. McDingus called him out for his lazy camp. He has no new coaching ideas, and looks like a particularly dim deer in a headlight at media availability.
I'm sure he has developed an eye twitch whenever his cellphone rings.

Yep
Last year they took on Kane and it was perceived that woodwork knew what he was doing.
However they seem to be in the same spot as they were before and no one up there has a clue of how to fix it

Some years back, I got thoroughly roasted on this very forum for saying that the real brain of the Red Wings' front office was not Holland, but Jimmy Devellano. He built the house that Holland moved into; he set up the scouting and management systems that Holland used so well.
Well, now we see what happens when Holland hasn't got that quality of system to rely on. Instead of a pre-built house, he moved into an ATCO trailer in a gravel pit and was expected to do all the building himself. But he's not that guy. He's not an architect, and he's relying on the crappy organization the Oilers built before he got there.

At least Flames fans here - for the most part - don't believe their team is "something special" every single year and then watch them fall flat on their ovrerpaid butts.
We are pretty realistic in assessment and don't think that the "next guy we sign is our saviour"....not so much in Shelbyville.

100% & Devallano was smart enough to step back & bring in people as or more intelligent than himself (Demers, Murray, Bowman etc) and learn, build on, & use their institutional knowledge.
Holland was a cog in the wheel, not the machine, & certainly not the architect. It can also be argued that Jim Nill was a more important cog in the wheel if you look at both their post-Red Wing work and what happened to the Wings success when they left.
Woodcraft is such a putz. Stoked the wheels are falling off under his lead. Can't believe the sweatpants wearing hosers up North thought he was an amazing coach. When he gets fired how will he be able to afford his jet black hair dye?

Good point about Jim Nill!

It’s honestly amusing reading Oilers Twitter and seeing their fans realize that McDavid & Draisaitl globetrottering isn’t enough. Oh who could’ve saw that coming!?!?!?

It feel like justice to have a demoralizing, flattening playoff defeat at the hands of the Avs throw their psyche into disarray. I’ve seen that story before
