I used to think that but my father passed away in 2009 at a young age and it made me realize I would still compete as well. Rochette has trained for 4 years to set herself up for this tournament and her mother was behind her every step of the way. She would watch her at most events and cheer her on. She is skating for herself to win but also for her mother for all the moments that they shared. By her not skating only would make it more difficult for her IMO.

Routine means a lot in situations like that. If she walked away from the competition, all she would have is constant grief to deal with, which can be overwhelming. Continuing with her training and competition gives her something else to focus on, which can help her deal with the immediate shock and grief in more manageable chuncks.
