unless we can move Hanifin in a cap-shedding deal for futures first. Could even be a bigger three-way-deal, with Nylander going to Calgary, Hanifin to a third team and futures from both partners to Toronto.

Flames would still need to trade one of Backlund, Tanev, or Grzelcyk with limited to no salary in return in order to be cap compliant for the upcoming season.
Extend Lindholm.
Your "core" moving forward is:
Huberdeau, Lindholm, Kadri, Nylander, Weegar, Andersson, Markstrom. Hope young players can develop and supplement and replace the core eventually.

If this doesn't pan out we are tied to an older core with no relief in sight. How will we deal with the aging group next season or the season after?

I love Tanev, but you're right. Youth and Health are serious factors.

Tough spot to be in, elderly teams do not win the Cup as a general rule. Have to hope for some LTIR help in that case.

Like others have said, I doubt Nylander signs a long-term extension this Summer (other than perhaps in Toronto). With the cap going up I can't see him signing an extension on a new team. There is no point in giving up significant futures for a rental. If it's a Tanev, Zadorov, or someone along those lines then it makes sense... but Conroy would be insane to give up Wolf, a 1st rounder, or prospects. Thankfully it appears Conroy and Co. know as much as they know full well they can't be gambling for the future, as they were under Tree.

Don't they have a ton of free-agents now as well?
Matthews, Nylander, Bertuzzi, Domi, Brodie, Muzzin, Klingberg, Lafferty, Gio, Liljegren(RFA).
That's a lot of expiring contracts the leafs have to deal with. You could argue that they are ready to move on from Brodie, Muzzin, and Gio. Meanwhile, Bertuzzi, Klingberg and Domi were 1 year rentals. However, the leafs are going to lose quite a few players for nothing after this season.

Apparently Trev wants our first, Wolf and to tie us up with another expensive contract. Imagine if we did that and had another bad year , everyone would be saying where is Wolf? Going to be a mess if this doesn't work. Be patient Flames.

Nylander would have to switch to the number 92 that the old man wore. Eat Bread has 88 already.

If they traded Wolf, I'd call it quits on this team for a while.

Really? After everything that’s happened in the last year or so it would be trading an unproven at the NHL level goalie prospect that would be the bridge too far? I like Wolf too but if you’ve stuck around until now what’s one more move? At this point we’re all committed to inhaling the smoke from this tire fire don’t decide you’re gonna move upwind now.

Another thing effecting flames is what is that cap number next year. Calgary has modelling with anywhere from 3-8+ on the total cap next year.
|
Yeah, at this point I’m expecting the team to go into the season with Hanifin and Lindholm not signed to an extension

Most teams that have won recently bet big on guys in their mid 20’s to take them to the promise land. Gives them a 4-5 year window until those guys are 30 or 31 and then the window closes. Betting big on players at the end of their 20’s or even into their 30’s would be a unique approach.

One year of Willy does not make us better long term. I'm not convinced 6-8 years of 27 year old Willy at $9+ is a good look for us either. Wolf and our first for the opportunity to sign Willy, hah, I think we can all agree Tre can go kick rocks.
*Moot point I guess as that trade would leave our cap unchanged so we couldn't add Willy to the books anyway.

I'd prefer to keep Wolf; Calgary doesn't have a lot of goalie prospects and it would be nice to develop one for a change instead of overpaying for another UFA goalie to be the starter.
Nylander is a good player, but at 9.5? Depends where you see Calgary - personally, I think Calgary is on the fence right now. W/O Lindolm, Calgary doesn't look like much of a contender even with Nylander (assuming he would even sign here)... With Lindholm, I don't think Calgary has any cap space to try adding Nylander.

Our better younger players will have to be traded away to make room for 35+ year old Kadri, Lindholm, and Huberdeau. Or: trade away all our high picks or prospects to clear out the pile of burned money.

Agreed. More apples are going to fall from the tree we just have to be patient. Also trading for Nylander when we have not seen if our own guys are commited or can play seems silly.
I woild rather wait and see if our own players are serious. The "Real Deal" insisted and convinced everyone he was going to bring it the next season and we still got more of the same.

Lindholm at 50% for Logan Cooley
Why:
Calgary won’t get a better potential chance at a great player for Lindholm
A 2.5 million dollar bird in the hand is better than a bird with a flight risk in the bush for Arizona.
Arizona says they want to be good this year, how does adding a top line center for nothing off your roster sound?
Maybe some conditional picks on each side to hedge for risk both ways
