Don't forget about the number of people that "will move out of this country". Our population will surely drop by a few million.

Liberal campaign co-chair steps down after advising TransCanada on lobbying next government

Quote:
Justin Trudeau's national campaign co-chair is stepping down after it emerged he sent a detailed email this week to people behind the Energy East pipeline with advice on how and when to lobby a new government — including if it happened to be a Liberal minority.

In the email, a copy of which was obtained by The Canadian Press, Gagnier told five people at TransCanada Corp. to target the right people in a new government as quickly as possible so they can help shape either Liberal or NDP decisions on a national energy strategy.
Such a lobbying effort would be needed to ensure the planned "in-service" dates of projects like Energy East aren't put at risk, the email said.

Gagnier wrote that getting this "early entry point" in any revisions to the rules governing the National Energy Board "is sensitive," but also an opportunity.

He just says: In order to avoid becoming a distraction to the campaign, I have decided to take a step back from my responsibilities to the Liberal campaign," Dan Gagnier said in a statement Wednesday.

So I'm assuming he doesn't want the news or other parties to run away with it and make it negative. Wouldn't wanna hurt that momentum now haha

I don't think it's illegal (I could be wrong, but nothing comes to mind) but the optics aren't great, I guess.

Quote:
Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver charged taxpayers hundreds of dollars to upgrade his seat on flights and spent more than $5,000 twice on in-country flights during his time as a cabinet minister. In July 2012, Oliver spent $5,593 on two one-way flights between Toronto and Calgary so he could hold roundtable meetings with oil, gas, steel and pipeline companies.
Quote:
"Joe Oliver has travelled extensively in his capacity as a cabinet minister and always complies with government guidelines. He flies business class according to guidelines and because it permits him to work on the flight," Nick Bergamini said.
Bergamini said Oliver sometimes had no other choice but to book flexible airfares that tend to be more expensive.
"Because his schedule frequently changes at the last minute, it is more economical to book flexible flights."
Federal travel rules allow ministers to charge for business class or higher when they are on a flight that is more than two hours long. Many upgrade their seats through travel points collected as they travel the country on government business, which doesn't add extra costs to the public purse.
Travel expenses have been a thorn in the side of the Conservative government before.
Former cabinet minister Bev Oda lost her post following public outrage that she charged taxpayers for a $16 glass of orange juice during a stay at the swanky Savoy hotel in London, U.K.
Oliver did charge $16 US for a drink at the rooftop restaurant of the Mamilla Hotel in Jerusalem while he was there in late June 2012. The receipt doesn't describe the drink, but the prices on the hotel menu suggest either scotch or vodka.
CBC in full attack mode. Are we really expecting a cabinet minster to fly coach? and do we care if they have a scotch at the end of the day?
Gotcha politics has gone to ludicrous levels at this point ... on both sides.

And for all you folks who like to whine about the Sun comment section take a gander at the gene pool contributors on the CBC site.

What do former political leaders have to offer? Hypocrisy!

Quote:
Our former leaders are either completely lacking in self-awareness or think Canadians have the memory of gnats. First there was Paul Martin, the finance minister who cut $25 billion in spending to end Canada’s chronic deficits, publicly supporting the Liberals’ plan to return to the red.

Next up was Jean Chretien, the man whose government imposed a $975 “head tax” on refugees who applied for permanent residence, excoriating the Harper government for supposedly being “cold-hearted” towards refugees.

And finally, there was the spectacle of Alison Redford, the woman whose interest in “change” ceased the moment she took the reins of the premiership (and who managed to take the Tories’ complacency and entitlement to yet another level), arguing about the need for — you guessed it — “change.”

With just over a week to go, this campaign will undoubtedly yield further lessons yet. For Canadians’ sake, let’s hope it’s not too many.

Though it bugs me that Masters' whole campaign is pretty much "I hate Stephen Harper". He never seems to offer policy or opinions or give anything beyond the party line.

Went to panel of UVic Poli Sci profs tonight and there were a couple interesting nuggets I took away.

- They had a prof in from Toronto whose expertise was in political psychology and has done a lot research on polling. Claims he taught most of the pollsters, wouldn't reveal which ones were the best. He said the biggest problem with today's polls is that the response rate is usually 1 in 10 or less, which completely screws with the idea of random sampling. Most of the pollsters have weighting mechanisms but these mechanisms can be incredibly flawed as well. It's unlikely that the national numbers are that far off, but trying to predict seat shares out of the national numbers or trying to get accurate numbers for ridings is pretty difficult. Also said that cancelling the long-form census has really hurt pollsters.

- The Canadian Constitution expert believes that the way Harper and the opposition parties have run their campaigns that this election is basically a referendum on Harper. He thinks that because of this, and because the opposition parties have explicitly stated throughout the campaign that they won't support a Harper minority, that it would be well within constitutional convention if they defeated the throne speech and attempted to form a government at the behest of the government. Thinks this is a very likely scenario if Harper wins a small plurality of seats

- They also talked about electoral reform and PR. One prof quipped that it's very hard for a party whose just won an election in one system to want to switch to another system. PR might only happen if the Liberals have a small plurality and need the NDP to back them on things. More likely that smaller changes are made to help with advance voting, registering high school kids so there's less wait times for first-time voters, better staffing for elections Canada.

- The topic of foreign policy came up and one of the profs brought up the fact that Canada has reduced it's foreign aid under Harper and has instead created framework wherein they give foreign aid money to private enterprises to go and set up various services in needy countries (I'm paraphrasing from memory here so forgive me if I'm being inaccurate), and that any new government is going to have a hard time dismantling this framework.

That's very saddening to hear. My entire adult life I have never had a vote in a riding that was contentious in any way. The polling is about 97% for one party and has been that way forever. It really makes it feel like voting is a total waste of time and I would really like for proportional representation to happen.

I know what you mean, this is the first time in my life that the conservative doesn't have a 30 point lead in my area (we had Harper before I moved to where I am now and Rob Anders for the longest time.... barf)

The good thing is that the Liberal in my riding is within a couple points, so I'm hoping that my vote may actually count for something.
