Good catch. Sorry, had old numbers.

The latter makes sense because Carolina is 2 up on us and holds the ROW tiebreaker.

Thank god the Jets pulled that one out of their butts. Now just need Carolina to win one game (or... sacrilege, the flames to lose one) and we'll stay up in the big 5 of the draft pending the lottery.

Craig Button speculating on TSN that the Oilers will trade their 1st round pick to the Islanders for Griffin Reinhart if Ekblad is not available.

Saying it might free up the Islanders to give up their pick to the Sabres this year instead of 2015.

Doubt it happens but interesting scenario.

I could see that, the Oilers cronyism seems to extend to the Oil Kings, they draft at least one Oil King over slot pretty much every year.

Griffin is OK and pretty much what they need, still giving up a 2nd overall pick for a guy whose upside is solid stay at homer (imo) is a pretty bold move and really flies in the face of what they seemed to be trying to do building a KHL all-star team.

I still think we stay at the #5 draft pick. Funny that the Isles win a game when they probably know that the 4th rounder is now a lock for them.

Really interesting scenario, because that most likely means if Ekblad goes first, Oilers would draft Sam Reinhart, and suddenly have 2 Reinharts on the team going forward.

Now that we probably aren't getting a GM until after the draft I kinda wish they'd have kept Weisbrod as the AGM.

How would they draft Sam Reinhart with the pick they traded for Griffin Reinhart?

Don't the Isles need to relinquish said pick before the Lottery though?

I guess they could make a trade before the Lottery as both aren't in the playoffs. But I thought that was frowned upon as well. An unspoken rule so to speak.

According to Friedman, the Isles have to make a decision by June 1st. Which is after the draft lottery.

Quote:
The Islanders have until June 1 to let Buffalo know of their intentions regarding the first-round draft pick the Sabres acquired in October's Thomas Vanek trade. That way, both teams will know exactly where the selection falls in the lottery. If New York does not send this year's choice to Western New York, Buffalo gets 2015's.

Such a weird transaction overall. I would've been under the impression the pick would have to be decided upon before the pick was used. But that's cool.

I'd love for the Oilers to take Reinhart over their pick (cause the player they'd pick would likely be better). It makes sense too, cause they need more immediate help. Wonder who Buffalo would draft at 4th and who would then be left for us...

Depends on who you listen to. A mock trade I saw reckoned it would be Dal Colle, the guys on TSN think it will be Reinhart, but obviously that depends on whether or not he has been picked up already. Either way, Ekblad and Bennett will go 1st and 2nd IMO, then it's up in the air. Also depends on what Burke thinks we need most. Another centre man like Reinhart or Draisaitl or a power winger like Dal Colle?

That scenario above wouldn't work though. How can Edmonton trade the pick for Griffin and still pick up Sam?

Griffin Reinhart, not sam. Isles get the #2 or #3 pick, give up their #4 to Buffalo, and Edm gets Griffin.

Bahaha. 2nd overall for Griffin Reinhart? That truly would be a Oilersian level move of stupidity.

I like the trade. I think nyi would have to give up another second at least. Griffin is a great young d-man and this also helps the oilers avoid screwing up another talented forward. I think if griffin is traded straight up for # 2 or 3 it shows how weak this draft is.

I think you're discounting the Oil King factor. They'll overvalue anyone who has shown an ability to survive 4 years in Edmonton.

Really, whether Ekblad is available or not, it might make sense for them to trade their pick for Griffin anyway. He's 2 years older and should be closer to being an NHL regular.
