People need to get that the Ukrainians are also propagandizing - in their case somewhat understandably, but the information coming from Ukrainian officials is going to be whatever serves its own defence, including trying to alarm the rest of Europe and make this more directly their problem (i.e. "radiation leaks don't respect borders" warnings).
There's definitely plenty of propaganda on all sides right now. I find a lot of twitter accounts, like Visegrad 24, are good sources for content...but they pump out anything that comes their way, regardless of source or factual accuracy. They've become a hype machine. Of course once it's part of the news cycle, it's hard to reign it back...
Ukraine definitely seems to be putting out its share of alarming news in order to scare the world into more direct action... which may work in some respects, but in the big picture can be extremely irresponsible as it can create false hysteria that may actually lead to serious escalation. Especially when it comes to loaded topics like nuclear, people need to stop disseminating claims as soon as they come out, and wait for actual experts to weigh in. So far, all the various claims about nuclear plants have been wildly exaggerated, or just plain false, when examined at by industry experts or governing bodies.

Sorry, I had seen the same thing from a few different twitter sources, so it seemed legit. And some facts were, it was the extra assumption of radiation issues that weren't, and I'm not sure who inserted that bit as it was repeated in independent sources.

Wanted to give a final update on my wife's situation:
Spoiler!
Yesterday her and her 2 companions made their way to the UA/PL border crossing at Korczowa - Krakovets. They were dropped off on the road leading to the border and it was an expected 22ish hour wait by foot. Luckily, they came across another couple driving an SUV that was headed to Poland and this couple offered all 3 of them a ride, therefore allowing them to ride into the passenger vehicle queue line, which was only about 7 hours long.
I would like to say that CP member LEGOMAN stepped up HUGE to pick me up in Krakow, drive to the border and get sent in multiple directions, wait at a meeting point, and REUNITE my wife and I together after almost 3 weeks of pure stress and hell. This is by far the biggest and most important favor I have ever asked of anybody and I cannot thank him enough for doing what he did, for his wife and kids letting a complete internet stranger take time away from them, to do this.
It was a pretty emotional ride home as my wife was telling us some stories of her time around Kharkov. How her parents and family were still there with no power, internet, heat and small food supplies. How her friend who was with us, her 23 year old classmate (mother of 2) was shot by a 'brave' Russian soldier and died. How soldiers were shooting at people trying to fix the power lines to get light in their houses. How her step dad drove over bodies to drive the girls to Kharkov train station to get them to safety. I was honestly at a loss for words as she spoke about these events.
There's a long road to recovery and healing for these 3 as they will be staying with us before my wife and I move to Canada in 8 weeks. My landlords are being extremely helpful by finding us the social assistance programs and donations points in our city and offering to drive them anywhere they need. It will be tough, but they are safe and sound.
I am forever grateful to those who offered support on CP, made small talk by PMs, put me as a 'surprise' guest in one of the Flames' pregame Puppetman videos, and especially Legoman for driving us. I will never for that. Also hoping to an end sooner than later for this bitter, needless war.
I would be very interested to hear about the menal and physical toll this has taken in your wife and here friends. Do they feel safe but have nightmares? My 24 hour Rollercoaster cost me 4 pounds so far how much worse is it for your wife? She's been through something most of us can't really imagine. How is the recovery?

I feel awful for him and this whole situation. I am furious about how powerless the world seems here, but he directs some pretty unrealistic criticism in this video.
Although I will admit if I was in his shoes I would probably be willing to call Russia on their nuke threats. I am getting closer to that thinking myself the more this drags on and as we see the completely unjustified devastation being inflicted by this maniac.
This is amazing. CP brought Legoman and HW together who otherwise wouldn't have known each other. Because of CP, Legoman was able to help HW reunite with his wife fleeing a literal warzone.
Is this the greatest moment in CP history?

Well, I mean we did just beat Edmonton, and then there was Steve Smith’s foot.
I kid. I kid.

I am still stunned at the lack of military action and even pushback from major organizations like the UN, NATO and G7 nations with all of this. Start with enforcement of war crimes, start with human rights abuses and go from there.
I understand the spineless leaders of these organizations and countries love the press conferences, the lunches and patting themselves on the back and bragging about how well they are doing. Speeches of Putin paying the full price of American Military Power (STOU address) All this NATO talk about military spending, an attack on one is an attack on all BS is comical.
Seeing the back and forth and juggling of Polish airforce and US Airforce and the closing of the door on transferring the jets is the type of BS talk that Putin doesn't do. Everybody passing the buck and scared of their own shadow is exactly what Putin was expecting.
Like I said before, some leaders in history are spineless and other's make the decisions to get their message and their issue across.
Everybody sitting back and worried about the perception of escalating this war while Putin is actually escalating the assault and the war. Bombing children's hospitals and having huge numbers of Ukrainian military assisting the dead and wounded? Sure, why not? Who's going to stop us?
Slaughter is met with slaughter and when the levels of atrocities from Russia escalate to untold levels, maybe the worlds powers can than quit stroking each other off and maybe deal with the aggressor who is having trouble fueling his offensive.

Guy honestly what do you want the West to do?
The madman has nukes.
This is going to sound crass, but isn’t it better for the country of Ukraine to fall than for WWIII break out and human annihilation?
The west is supporting as much as they can without escalating the situation to a global conflict in which billions will die.

Considering the circumstances, it really was the least I could do to help.
We're all so glad to see you reunited with your wife, and I'm happy I was able to positively contribute to that!
Hoping this war ends soon - it's just terrible.
I am in full lurker mode now, but this was certainly worth a quick log-in and thanks. Incredibly unselfish act legoman. I can't imagine the hell that you and your wife have been through HW, and I am so happy you and your wife are re-united. Amazing!
Also kudos to CP for having such an informative thread so well filtered of rubbish and propaganda, and pretty much just containing the facts.
As for my piss-ant opinion on this. I believe this ends with a pseudo-revolution and the imprisonment and/or execution of Putin and his cronies, as long as Ukraine can hold out to really let the sanctions bite. He's already lost this war no matter the outcome. Russians have had a 30 year taste of the western world, they are not going to accept going back to 1970's USSR.
Slowly the truth will be revealed, that he's walking young naive soldiers into a meat grinder, to massacre innocent people, and I believe the majority of Russians will not stand for it. This isn't North Korea, where basically nobody has been able to come or go and communicate with the outside world for 50 years. These people have connections globally, and will see through the propaganda in due time. I believe this hits a boiling point and they will do the right thing, and take matters into their own hands. Russia isn't evil, it's leader and government is.
Hang in there Ukraine. You are a beacon of light in a very complicated world. And I know you will prevail. And I say that as someone with very significant Russian ancestral roots.

Sadly this isn’t even on the radar of untold levels of atrocity. While this wildly sucks for all involved this is peanuts in the grand scheme of previous wars. The west getting involved certainly paves the way to a #### storm like you couldn’t even imagine. Russia bombing a childrens hospital isn’t going to bring the west in. Unfortunately you need to get used to that

Putin should never spend a minute of his life out of prison after this. What a monster. The war crimes are incalculable.
Totally breaks my heart seeing innocent women and children targeted like this.
I don't care if I'm alone in saying this but I would rather take my chances on a nuclear war than to allow Putin to keep doing this shock and awe campaign, war crimes mean nothing to this guy because he's been getting away with it for years.

Peanuts compared to previous wars, yes.
I sure hope that our standards as a society aren't "well, at least it's not as bad as WWII" and we move on.
I still think the 21st Century can be the century of peace, despite the first 20 years being violent. That's my hope, anyway.

So in this conflict US/NATO? should become the world police, but not in previous conflicts.
The level of atrocity isn't even in the ballpark (yet) as other civil wars in the past 20 years - most of which are still ongoing. We all turn a blind eye to those atrocities - I guess because they arent in your face front page news?
And that is why they are called world wars - If the WORLD gets involved in a local conflict then the world is at war (Even if just with a single country)
And that country has the ability to permanently alter human history with their weaponary.

I am terrible at imbedding links. Lawrence O'Donnell from msnbc news did a good job of explaining why in a monologue a few days ago. Google his name and cold war. Should pop up.
