Colour requires some combined things. An ability to give hockey insights but it has to be combined with the actual play on the ice. There are a few guys who go between periods that analyze plays and/or the overall play who are really good. I don't know if they'd be good at colour because that would require quick thinking and reacting. A good colour person also researches for tidbits on players for the game.
Cassie's issue is combining her hockey knowledge and more often her research with the actual play. That's when she starts to rely on a narrative which may not match the play on the ice, and you notice her repeating a theme a lot.
As for getting a play wrong - meh. She does it no more than Hrudey or any other commentator. And I sure don't like the "monotone" or "humourless" comments I hear all the time. She's not monotone, she just has a female voice and that bugs some people. She jokes all the time, though it's not in an old boys way. Not as self deprecating as Hrudey but then again, he was a goalie, and it's easier for him to joke about not stopping pucks than it is for her to joke about, say, missing shots.

They're not saying she doesn't have the experience, just that her commentary doesn't relay that experience to the audience. It's the same criticism as has been said about Simmer and Peplinski when they did colour.

Uh, no. SutterBrother’s comment was in response to her credentials, so she does not have “anything close” to the qualifications or experience to be an effective commentator on the NHL game. The implication being that women’s hockey is not high level. And that’s problematic.

I know I'm in the minority but I don't mind Hrudey, I quite like his insight, even if sometimes it's borderline silly and pointless lol

I think Hrudey is great with Ball. Not sure why anyone would have a problem with that team.

I like the perspective and stories Hrudey brings and he’s got a fun rapport with Ball. I don’t have a problem with Campbell-Pascall either. And I actually *want* the broadcast team—national or regional—to actually mention the other team.
Also, mentioning McDavid (gasp!) doesn’t imply a secret Sportnet mandate to plug the Oilers. He’s the best player in the world and comparisons to the best happen, just like when Crosby was in his prime. The only difference is Crosby wore less offensive colours.

Hrudey is the worst.

Kelly is not the best, but he's not the worst. Blabs a little too much, but his chemistry with Ball (who is the best) is undeniable and makes for an overall great broadcast.
I have a spot spot for Millen as color because I remember his voice for 00s playoff hockey which were my formative NHL fan years. Galley is great.
We should all be thankful we don't get Garret with any regularity lol.
I want to add that I hope we see more Mikkelson, Hextall and Botteril when it comes to female personalities on TV. All three are terrific. Cassie is passable at panel analyst. Downright terrible as color.

I don’t feel women’s hockey (even Olympic women’s hockey) is anywhere close to men’s professional hockey. Physicality being the most significant outlier.
I respect her tremendously for what she accomplished in the women’s game. Period.
But that experience doesn’t serve her in calling NHL hockey. Is she going to relay a story about a big physical Russian trying to take her head off in front of the net? If she did would it mean anything?
You don’t have to be a pro hockey player to do NHL color. But if you lack pro experience, you need to bring other things to the table IMO to be successful.

I like Shannon Szabados on the broadcast too. She seems genuinely fun. And raw, I don't think she's had much training.

She's a goalie, that's all the training she needs.

He chuckles at his own jokes and brings little else than that annoyance to the table. I think any perceived "chemistry" is just Ball doing a fantastic job.
Kelly doesn't bring any insight to the broadcast. He may have the ability to do so (I believe he was better earlier in his tenure), but the quality of his work has declined significantly. I think Cassie brings more actual analysis to a broadcast than Kelly does, but neither are good.

Don't think I've mentioned this in here, but I've joined Loubardias, Prusina, Klein, Riley Pollock, and Gino De Paoli on the play-by-play roster for the 2022 Alberta Championship Cup later this month. Really looking forward to it.

Looking at Twitter this morning something seems to be up. Boomer made a post about being at work before 3AM but the morning show is not on today according to 960

From the amount I heard yesterday, they sure seemed to be pimping their Instagram live broadcast a lot. Sure looks like they're getting canned.

Last week they had Covid so we’re shutdown but today seems bizarre. I heard both the Boomer show and Flames talk were performing well on the podcasts rankings so not sure they would be making more cuts. If they do they need to target the Big Show but I am guessing those guys are hired on the cheap.
