This. I think someone explained to him that hegemon meant USA. Maybe Carney should offer to give him his standing ovation

Notice he doesn't mention a date as to when those tariffs would go into effect, so the 100% thing is clearly just a nonsense threat meant to make noise and cause panic. To me it reads more like a warning that if we make any more deals with China, he'll make us pay. Essentially trying to dictate to a sovereign country who we can and can't trade with.

Don’t they know all you need to do is publicly stroke Trump’s ego (among other things) and you can get him to agree to anything?

This is just so elementary it’s stupid.

I don’t know what Carney hoped to achieve with that Davos speech but if his intention was to trigger a tantrum by the baby in chief he got what he wanted.
No, Trump is mad because Carney helped western farmers with their canola and beef with the deal with China. That is what set this off, when Carney helped the farmers on the prairies in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Can someone who is far more economically educated than I explain how 100% tarriffs hurts Canadas exports and helps the USA some how. Aside from the automotive/ aircraft industries all we sell to the uSA is commodities

Potash - they import 80% of the Potash used in From Canada, the only other source is Russia and Belarus and have fun with that. They NEED Potash and will contiinue to import, if they slap a 100% Tarriff all that will happen is make farming more expense and incresae food costs acros the board. Right?

Clean Energy - Tarriff Hydroelectricity and all they do is increase energy costs. They NEED this energy

Oil and Natural Gas. Again they NEED this , tarriff and incresae costs again for the US consumer.

Critical Minerals such as Uranium. Dont they NEED this to operate power plants.

Lumber - again they Need this to build homes - Tariff and just increase the costs of home building.

its not like they can get these items from elsewhere, so Tarriffs only increase the cost of living for US citizens. Its not like we are selling them T-shirts or electronics. if that were the case Tarriffs might make sense, something the USA could sever ties with importing and manufacture themselves. Canada sells the US things they NEED. Things they dont have enough of and need to import, they wont stop importing these items... so explain to me how these tarriffs would at all in anyway shape or form help the US? Maybe i dodnt see the whole picture. Am I naive or am I basically right in my assumption...

You are wrong. You're either willfully obtuse or "just asking questions". You're limbering up your lower jaw - where is your pride?

Carney's brutally honest speech could not have been more perfectly supported by Trump's thuggish appearance the following day.

And regarding his tantrums, I say good - everytime Trump threatens and bullies Carney's speech will resonate more and more European and asian trading partners.

Now he's saying NATO hasn't done anything for the US, despite NATO soldiers responding to article 5 and dying in Afghanistan. He's saying the US will be withdrawing troops from the Korean peninsula.

You want to know what Carney hoped to achieve? It was a speech equally to Canadians and to potential trade partners that we are decoupling our economy as much as possible from Trump and the US. That we are going to be more flexible with how we work with countries that do not share all of our values.

How is this so hard for you?

This has nothing to do with our recent deal with China. As mentioned earlier, just last week Trump was saying that he had no issues with the deal, and that it was a smart move by Canada.

This is nothing more than a narcissistic toddler lashing out with more stupid bulls*** because Carney stole his thunder in Davos, and that the entire world is praising Carney’s speech.

I would agree with that, but the reason that Trump cites is the Liberal deal to help out folks on the prairies. It is not about dairy.

And it’s back to Governor Carney. Entirely predictable. His focus will be on wrecking our economy.
Come on, he’s not putting 100% tariffs on all our exports. First of all, we’ve seen this time and time again this year. Second, have a look at the post above and tell me with a straight face that he’s heading into midterms (assuming they take place) with farmers paying extra for potash, everyone paying extra for energy and the list goes on. He a complete blowhard.

And probably most offensive about this, is the idea that we (a sovereign nation) can’t negotiate a trade deal with who we want for fear that they won’t appreciate it. If we comply with that, we’re nothing more than a vassal state. We should be preparing a kindly worded PFO.
