I think the question is this the best final ever. Compare it to other WC finals, Euro, Champions league, etc. Aka a game that decided the champion. This has to be near the top but I assume there was a better Copa final at some point.

Well even in that discussion it has to be weighted by importance of final with WC at the top... a lot more people watch this than the Champions League.

I have loved and admired the way Messi plays the game pretty much throughout his pro career. He's not only brilliant with the ball, but he's not a diver, he's not a complainer, he's not dirty, and he seems like a very decent guy. He's a model player in every way. I would have felt sad for him to finish his career without winning this.

With all that considered It has to be in the conversation for the greatest game ever.

If that’s not in the conversation then I need a list of at least 5 games with as much drama, intrigue and quality as that one and huge stakes on the line.

I can’t think of a major tournament game in my lifetime. Italy - Germany in the 06 semi-final always stood out to me but I’m biased as an Italy fan (Italy-France 00 Euro Final was great too)

Italy France final in 06 was drama filled as well.

This game was probably the best I've watched live.

I liked it too.

Better when it’s cold outside to justify watching soccer all day then when it’s +20 and summer is just starting.

Also felt like players being in mid-season form added to the quality of the tournament.

One of the greatest finals of all time? Debatable. 2005 in Istanbul comes to mind.

I have no love for the guy but Mbappe may have just had the best individual performance at any WC Final, dragging France’s bench squad to PKs against an in form Messi and full strength Argentina.

For two careers that have paralled for so long Messi's and Ronaldo's sure have diverged dramatically in the last month.

One a WC winner and player of the tournament. The other dropped by his country. Sacked by his club and basically unwanted.

It’s close.

But I think this takes the edge. The comeback was just as good by France.

The stage was bigger (World Cup > Champions League).

And the stars were bigger IMO, there was no Messi or Mbappe like performance in that game (calm down Liverpool fans, Gerrard’s not on that level, and I say that as somebody who thinks Maldini is the greatest defender ever too)

To score in the 80 and 81st to tie it and then again in the 118 is crazy drama.
