Given we are 169 pages in, I am sure this question has been asked several times - but, I really fail to see how the panthers think they got better overall as a team as they effectively lost two front line guys and replaced him with one guy.

They are playing the long game and banking on Tkachuk being a perennial 100 point guy.

Its not even just that though, its the fact that they got a younger winger in Chucky and bought themselves the opportunity to surround him with more talent through drafting?
But they've blown most of their 1st round (eg. 'Most Likely') picks for the foreseeable future.
It really is a little baffling. By the time they can realistically surround Chucky with more talent he's going to be....Huberdeau's age.
Either way though, I am not looking this gift horse in the mouth. Start. The. Car.

Bill Zito has stated that Tkachuk is a generational player so that shows where he values Chucky. As a GM you can only afford so many big money deals and Zito bet on Tkachuk at 24 being someone worth investing 8 years and $76M for the same term and Barkov and eventually Ekblad will get his next extension.
The trade is great for Calgary because they want to win now so getting 2 win now players was a great return. The flames have committed huge money for one players age 30-38 years and likely will do something similar for a players 29-36/37 years which Florida wasn’t sure they wanted to do.
Great trade for 2 clubs looking to win now and shape the cores of their respective team moving forward. The deal makes sense for both sides in my opinion

Any which way you look at it, the Panthers appear to be worse on the whole.
You subtracted a line driver that fueled your secondary scoring (and now those complementary players will be worse without him), and the only guy on your defense that was capable of doing a solid job of filling in for Ekblad when he went down. Then the futures.
And you brought in a pest who is good at supporting top players but is slow and fades in important games.
There are some prices a unicorn just isn't worth paying for.
Zito was drunk on some potent love potion, fortunately for us.

Panthers absolutely got worse. Between Marchment, Duclaire, Giroux, Huberdeau and Weegar they have lost over 300 points. Tkachuk replaces 100 so they're still in a massive offensive deficit. Their depth outside of centre is awful.
Bobrovski was their fatal mistake and the fact that they're getting worse while hemorrhaging 1st round picks should be of grave concern to their fan.

Anyone wondered over to the Panthers HF board over the summer? I wonder what they're thinking of this trade. If I was a Florida fan I would be crossing fingers on both hands and looking for cloverleafs because I don't thing Tkachuk was worth what they up.

Laughed when it dawned on me this was not a typo.

On the main boards on HF there’s actually been a good chunk of Panthers fans who felt they won the trade by having a younger star winger locked up long term over an older one

Also on Reddit hockey which seems to be fairly balanced.
I don’t get it- one for one … maybe they win one could argue on age?
Panthers weren't going anywhere with the way their team was built. Switching Huberdeau for Tkachuck gives them a different dynamic. Giving up Weeger too though was dumb.

I agree in the short term, but the Panthers also avoided $17M for Huberdeau/Weegar. So, starting next season, they get the younger star + and extra ~$8M cap space to spend on the market.
Cap space has value, but I agree that this season they are worse off. We will see going forward.

Where are they going now exactly...they had a better shot with their previous roster. Even most great teams choke in the playoffs a time or two. Ask the Avs.
