^ i read that article as well and it is stupifying.

When Trudeau was last outside the country a few weeks ago I beleive he made various promises to spend almost a billion dollars, plus yesterday steve g made a $350m drop to some biodiversity thing.

I get wanting to help out with various things, but at some point you need to slow down.

However, I have also wondered with respect to government announcements - how long does it take for the funds to flow? How many projects are never followed thru with etc.

As always when this comes out - if we are screwed because of our debt levels - so are Belgium, France, Spain, UK, Portugal, US, Italy, Greece and Japan - which all have equivalent or higher debt to gdp ratios than Canada.

Yeah Canada will be a wasteland by 2030. Frozen tumbleweeds will be all that’s left.

Probably good for the environment. Plus people who don't want kids still don't have to have kids. Immigrants have also been a fantastic boon for this country in growth and development. I'm not seeing a downside here.

Auditor general finds a 'minimum' of $27.4 billion in suspicious COVID benefit payments

Canada’s auditor general says a “minimum” of $27.4 billion in suspicious COVID-19 benefit payments need to be investigated because the government did not manage the aid programs efficiently, and it will likely fail to recover “significant” amounts in overpayments.

That’s in addition to $4.6 billion in confirmed government overpayments solely in double-dipping applications for the various COVID-19 aid programs launched within the first months of the pandemic, according to a new report by Auditor General Karen Hogan published Tuesday.

“The Canada Revenue Agency and Employment and Social Development Canada did not manage the selected COVID‑19 programs efficiently given the significant amount paid to ineligible recipients, the limited adjustments as programs were extended, and the slow progress on post‑payment verifications,” the report concludes.

Her report notes there are at least $27.4 billion in suspected ineligible payments that CRA and ESDC let through over the six programs that now need to investigate on top of the $4.6 billion in overpayments it has already identified and is trying to claw back.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, Hogan warns. The report chronicles a separate series of eyebrow-raising CERB payments, such as $1.6 billion to individuals who appear to have quit their jobs (instead of losing it due to COVID-19), $6.1 million to incarcerated recipients and $1.2 million in payments to dead people.

"No. The budget will balance itself."

Canada needs a strong and successful immigration program - we're far too large a land mass to have so few people living on it. There are incredible inefficiencies in this country simply due to having such a light population density as compared to our peers (USA).

I know you can't see this, but damn. You get your media from an echo chamber and you are crafting one here, too. No wonder so many people believe the BS they get fed nonstop.

Yoho would be a good case study on many many things wrong with this world.

That, and with climate change getting worse and international conflicts still raging, we should expect more refugees and immigration. I think it's incumbent on us as a nation to have a growth and management plan to handle this. And I don't necessarily think any of this is a bad thing at all - it's how the global is evolving and we're going to be an important player in it.

The biggest issue with these spending announcements was that at certain points in time they were a little more palatable because the money was essentially free to borrow.

But then it started coming to a point where even with criminally low interest rates the debt servicing costs started becoming one of the top budgetary line-items and that starts becoming a serious problem.

Now with interest rates rising its definitely a problem and they cant keep making frivolous spending commitments.

But again, nobody cares. That is 'Future Canada's' problem.

In regards to immigration? Its fantastic, we need it. The only real issue that Canada is going to face with regards to immigration is that we really have to determine what we're going to do about housing.

Canada is an expensive place to live.

IMO Yoho has become so effective recently precisely because he is lodged up the anus of our current premier, and it feels almost as if we are talking directly to her ass while reading his posts. Hearing her flatulence directly, if you will. Of course this is pretty offensive and enraging to bear. But just remember that it smells like #### because it is.
