Love that the trade has become so blatantly lopsided with the NHL components there is no question of who won the trade by a landslide unless Fox develops into a historically good dman
Do people actually still think Ferland and Lindholm are on the same planet as far as hockey players go?
Lindholm has more points than Hamilton/Ferland combined and is better defensively than either lol
Then "throw in" a 21 year old dman that is already better defensively than Hamilton and showing offensive signs....and contract status lol

Is it possible this was a good trade for both teams? The flames are deep with defensive prospects. Dealt from a position of strength. Canes get two quality players (one pending Ufa) and a top prospect. Flames get two quality players who were RFAs.

We can look at it as a win win. But I can’t be bothered to be all diplomatic.
I saw it as
Outbound: streaky F, and a soft one dimensional offensive D sheltered by a Norris calibre genius on D, plus a prospect who likely wasn’t going to sign
InBound: well rounded F who was a 5th overall and at the point of his career poised to breakout, and young mobile D with some offense and top 2 upside, both younger and RFA
Granted Ferly has surprised before getting hurt. Good for him.
Flames win. This is awesome

Whereas from Carolina's point of view –
Outbound: Two guys going into their second contracts, who were going to mess up the plan for the team to crawl along with its belly pressed to the salary floor.
Inbound: One guy we can cut loose after this year, and another who's highly tradeable, and at worst can go UFA in three years' time. Plus a good D prospect that, if we sign him, we can get on an ELC and save even more money down the road.
From a hockey standpoint it's a rotten trade, but in terms of the new owner's priorities it's great.

All out of Harvard. Harvard seems to produce good NHL players, I suspect that Fox will be another player that has a good NHL career coming out of Harvard.
|
Ok... two out of the three of those played all 4 years at Harvard, one said “Seeya” to the team that drafted him, and only Donato left school a year early to join the Bruins who happen to be located right next to Harvard.
What will Fox do? Jump early or get his Harvard degree and write his own ticket?
If Carolina signs him with Fleury/Bean in waiting it will be a surprise.

Interesting how Skinner, Lindholm, and Hanifin have seemingly gotten their careers back on track after leaving Carolina. Just saying.

Must have been the coach's fault.

The Flames have a lot of guys who have left town and picked up as well.
Two of those guys followed their old coach to a new team, and in related news Chiasson seems to be 2 goals off his career high goals after only a quarter season.
If it’s not about the coaches, Byron is doing okay in Montreal.
And then a few years back, that St Louis kid carved out an ok career.
Oh no. Calgary has a bunch too.

I don’t think he implied that Calgary was immune to that, did he? Every team probably has a list of guys who go on to be significantly better elsewhere. It’s common for players to excel with a change of scenery.

Lindholm is easily the best player in the deal. And Hanifin is already outperforming Hamilton.
The way things are going, Fox is going to have to become a star, just to keep the trade even.

Just saying that 3 roster players were moved out this past offseason because the new owner didn't feel like they were worth their next contracts.
They are all excelling and proving him wrong. Thought that was interesting.

I get the relevance of Byron and maybe Chiasson, but how is a 20 year old loss of a player in St.Louis relevant to this conversation?
Different management, different coaching staff, different player development team. Why would we be worried about what a completely different team essentially did with tgat prosoect at this point.
Glen Sathers Oilers were very good, doesn’t change the fact that today’s Oilers = NG for example.

None of the examples were relevant. Byron was lost on waivers.
Carolina let 3 players go (or moved them) in the same offseason strictly due to upcoming contract asks. All 3 players are excelling. That has to sting.

Fun fact: if you include Fox's NCAA stats, the trade is looking pretty even right now:
Lindholm and Hanifin.......: 16G, 29A, 43P
Ferland, Hamilton and Fox: 19G, 25A, 44P
(Fox is 5-15-20)

We all know abut Lindholm's impressive play this season.
But I think Noah Hanifin is starting to become a real offensive catalyst on the backend. He had a rough start offensively, but the last month of play from him has been a revelation.
First 13 games = 0 goals, 2 assists, 2 points
Last 15 games = 3 goals, 8 assists, 11 points (60 point pace)
I think he's just scratching the surface as well. In a few years from now, he could become an offensive force when Gio starts/or ever slows down.

I like that explanation vs. saying they got their careers back on track. I don't think they were ever off track but it is amazing to think Lindholm has already exceeded his goal total from 2 of 4 full NHL seasons, and may well exceed his best season by around the halfway mark of the year.
He has simply exploded.

The way Hanifin plays (skates, etc) reminds me of Boumeester while with the Panthers.
