I was very disappointed with Plex. Didn't do anything I wanted it to do, and I PAID for the subscription.
PS3 Media Server is much much better in my opinion, and it's free.

Besides the iOS apps everything about the Plex environment is free. The paid subsciption only gets you adavanced access to new features, its not necessary.
Can I ask what you found about Plex not to your liking?

I am actually curious what you wanted it to do that it wouldn't. It was 100% painless to set up and has worked flawlessly for me for a few months now.

Plex is incredible and it will be very tough for me to go elsewhere. Very easy program to manage.

Synology make NAS boxes. I use one as a media server so I don't have to keep a PC running all the time. This is the one I have.

Plex works fine on my Synology NAS. I have the 1512+. The only problem I really have is streaming blu ray rips because the processor in the synology isn't fast enough for this. I just set up a plex server on my spare i7 laptop and stream from the NAS but let the i7 do all the on the fly conversion.

I am interested in your success. I tried it last night and it didn't seem to work. Didn't get a chance to play with it or do any research as to what I did wrong though.

I have two apple tv's, so the one in the basement will get this setting and I will keep my upstairs one to the US settings so my kid can watch dinosaur train on netflix.

FYI, you should be able to change the DNS that Plexconnect is pointing to. I believe in the settings file Plexconnect is pointing to a generic google DNS... I changed this to the unblock-us DNS in the Plexconnect config file, restarted Plexconnect, and was able to access the US-based Netflix without issue.
This was done on a Mac... don't know if it works the same way for the PC.
