No they are good to go. There is a schedule up for all rural areas on that link that Hesla posted earlier.
Here it is again...

Ughh... The four to eight hour waits would beg to differ. But, that said, at least it's somewhat available, that part I agree.

According to a recent CBC tweet:
Quote:
Using Mon's stats & current hours at 4 clinics, it will take AB Health til March 12, 2010 to vaccinate 1.1 million Calgarians

I looked it up on the government website, and it looks like the earliest immunizations for my area are November 2nd, but an ordinary healthly person will have to wait until November 16th... at the earliest.

Well, I got both the H1N1 and the standard yesterday at the NE clinic. We went first thing and we were in and out in just over 2 hours. Our family is 5 and the time with the nurse was quite long as a result. Total wait was about 1 hour 20 mins... Hence wanting to get there early.
The H1N1 made all of our arms a lot more sore than the regular.... and we are all bagged today from the immune hit... My 6 year old had some diarrhea and a stomach ache too...
All in all not as bad as getting severely sick from H1N1. The regular flu shot is a crap shoot. Sometimes it works sometimes not and sometimes we get one and sometimes not. BUT H1N1 is specifically targeted to that flu so well worth it IMO.

I wonder if it's because if the combination of 2 shots? We had just the H1N1 yesterday and we (2 kids and wife) all just have the sore arm.

Getting a vaccine is like adding a key to the key ring of virus locks the immune system can unlock. Getting a new key doesn't weaken the system.
|
Well getting a vaccine does add stress to the immune system. It essentially forces the body to react as if it is sick. The system is a finite system that can only work and combat sickness at a finite rate. As such, it does weaken the system for a very short period. Adding the key strengthens the system but there is a very short term price (couple of days) when extra load is put on the system and it becomes slightly less able to combat other threats.
Still well worth it to get the key though...

In an earlier CBC article ( that was probably linked to earlier, but here it is) it sounded as though Alberta was caught off guard by the early approval of the vaccine. They thought they had until the second week of November to get their stuff together.
Quote:
"We didn't expect this vaccine until the second week of November so it's only late last week that we heard that the vaccine had been approved by Health Canada," chief medical officer of health Dr. Andre Corriveau said on CBC Radio's Wildrose on Monday.
"And I think it was quite an amazing feat over Friday and over the weekend that HS [Health Services] was able to train their staff and set up those clinics. And now they're just getting started. So let's give it a few days before we criticize the approach that's being used."
|
But it's all a moo point anyway, because the province only got 400,000 doses this week.
Quote:
"For all of Calgary, in a serious pandemic that has been foreseen for half a year, there are only four immunization clinics and only five in Edmonton," said Liberal MLA Kevin Taft, who tried to get a shot at a clinic in Edmonton Monday. "Nine clinics to urgently immunize two million people won’t do the job."
But the current number of clinics was based on fact the province was given 400,000 doses of the vaccine to start its program, Corriveau said.

Maybe. Getting both at the same time is likely more taxing on the immune system. The H1N1 arm soreness was certainly more pronounced than the regular shot!

Got Oliver Klozoff

I just had lunch with a friend of mine that is a nurse and she got the shot yesterday. I guess Doctors and nurses have a "special" clinic they go to so they don't have to wait in line. She said her arm is killing as well today. Still a small price to pay to avoid this flu....

|
Yes you can. Theo Fleury apparently showed up at the Okotoks clinic yesterday.
My wife got her shot today. The clinic opens at noon. She got there at 11:00 AM and she had her shot by 12:45 PM.
P.S. The clinics hours are from Noon to 6:00 Pm Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. If you get there before you close, you will get your shot. They won't send you home without it just because its past 6:00 pm.
.... another good thing is the line up is inside. The clinic is at the Centennial Arena (where the Okotoks Oilers Jr A team plays).
