I like the colors. Red and White is a Calgary Staple. Look at the Calgary Tower, the Saddledome, the base colors of the Stampede and our two big sports teams. I think it will look great.

That bridge is going to be a prime target for vandalism and grafitti.

It's not that bad. Seems like it's mainly designed to heat up the bridge a bit through direct sun rays, not a bad idea in the Spring, Summer and Winter. And, it'll protect bridge-users from the rain and snow a great deal.

There'll still be wind hitting the bridge from either side which will be felt by pedestrians; but atleast there's no large, direct surfaces for people to spraypaint on. They just have to kick or hit the glass rails to do some damage.

And it won't be too long before some punk with a bb gun shoots out the tempered glass. Some of the LRT stations like Anderson have a problem with the glass being shot out. In the end tax dollars will be spent constantly repairing the damage to the glass or cleaning up the grafitti.

why? wouldnt a giant flat blank wall made of concrete (ie, like what most other structures have), be much better to use as a canvas?

The world we live in is a terrible place, graffiti and shot out glass everywhere!

How many foot bridges have tempered glass covering the roof?

So now we can't use glass as a construction material for any public projects for fear of vandals?

My point is, was a tempered glass roof a necessity for this bridge?

I used to use Anderson station all the time and the glass that was shot out was often left for weeks before it was cleaned up and repaired - creating a eye sore.

Lots of downtown is glass. There doesn't seem to be a huge BB gun problem as far as I know. Plus, guranteed the bridge is more popularly used than the existing one to the east. Increased public presence will ease your BB gun concerns.

What about at night when most people are asleep. Isn't that prime time for vandalism activity? I know it was with the strip mall I lived behind in Queensland. Got torched twice and was grafitted on a regular basis. I moved soon after.

Sure, it's more of an opportune time for that to happen. However, you can't assume that a) it WILL happen, and that b) there won't be people there at that time. Those are just assumptions.

No one really knows what the City has planned for security of the bridge yet.

I like the design.

Hopefully that red holds up to the sun and elements. If not, we're going to be painting this thing every few years.

All the older Stampede stuff around the city has lost quite a bit of its luster. The reds are dull and almost orange now.

Man, Dion you have an argument for everything! I have a feeling this thing could be the Golden Gate Bridge that we built for 5 cents, and you'd still have a problem with it. I'm starting to see what Fotze was getting at.....

I would be very surprised if it didn't happen. You build something to sticks out like a sore thumb, you should expect that it will garner some bad attention.
