In the Living Category:
This guy has been famous for going on 50 years and it's still chugging along. This GuitarHero/re-master blitz lately is for songs that he wrote when he was a teenager ferchrissakes. He's an old man now and stuff he wrote all those years ago is more popular than current music.
I've always liked the Beatles but I've never had them on quite the pedestal that some people do. McCartney's transformation into a bit of an old woman with young women on his arm is kind of creepy, but he's definitely a historical figure. People are going to be listening to to songs he wrote forever. That's quite an accomplishment.

South of the equator: Howard Walter Florey (Australian) 1898 - 1968
Man, this category is hard. I was going to pick Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but he's apparently still alive. I thought otherwise for some reason. We really are a Euro-centric lot. At least I am.
Anyway, this Florey character was instrumental in the synthesis and production of penicillin, and for that he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945. That's a hell of a thing to do. Lots of people, maybe even some of us, would be dead if he didn't get that going.
Quote:
Florey is regarded by the Australian scientific and medical community as probably its greatest scientist. Robert Menzies, Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister, said that 'in terms of world well-being, Florey was the most important man ever born in Australia'.
|
He was also a Rhodes scholar, President of the Royal Society for a stretch, and just an all-around smart guy.
Interesting side-note in light of all the conspiracy talk around here -- The Rockefeller Foundation ponied up dough for the research into producing penicillin. Rockefeller, more than any other name perhaps, is always attached to plots of New World Orders and pretty much every shadowy cabal of overlords who are interested in doing us peons harm.

In the Writer category, MARK TWAIN:
I spoke about my admiration for Huckleberry Finn in the literature draft.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Twain
Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910),[3] an Americanauthor and humorist. Twain is most noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has since been called the Great American Novel,[4] and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He is extensively quoted.[5][6] During his lifetime, Twain became a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.
Twain enjoyed immense public popularity. His keen wit and incisive satire earned him praise from both critics and peers. William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".[7]

I really enjoyed this one. I wanted to modify it a bit and have another draft... anyone interested? Something like each person is a different country and needs to draft people in certain roles etc.....

Do they have to be native to the country you select?
Ex. If you were France, could you only pick French people?

No, you would be the Republic of Troutman and could pick anyone.
