I think its gotten much better.
I find driving in this city from November to the end of January to be absolute hell, and then it gradually works its way back up to purgatory.

A-holes. I hate them. Today's a-hole was spotted on 26th ave SW driving west. As he approached the light at 20th st, he was driving exactly where one would normally drive, about 2 feet away from the yellow line. This was not a normal situation, however.
You see, I was driving towards him from the other direction. Partially blocking my lane was a delivery truck that was in the process of dropping off his wares. Because he was partially blocking my lane, and because the oncoming lane is actually a big double lane to accommodate parking, I was driving about a foot over the yellow line.
Do you think this guy could pull over a bit? The huge double lane with no cars parked in it might be enough space? Noooo. Numbnuts steadfastly refused to move over, so at the last second, I had to jerk back over the line and hammer the brakes while buddy passed me waving his arm in the WTF kind of way. Yeah, buddy. WDF indeed.
I can't wait for a little angel to reply to this post quoting the rules of the road and completely ignore the fact that sometimes common sense supersedes the rules. In this case, the road more than accommodated two way traffic and a delivery truck parked on one side. All it takes is for the guy with the right of way to yield two feet of his 25 foot wide lane. Why is this not an automatic reaction for people?

Does anyone else hate people who seem to still go 30 km/h through school zones during the summer?

Even worse are those yokels who pass you in a no passing situation on a Playground zone in the summer, and glare at you as they are passing by @50kph

I hate with a passion people who can see a lane is ending due to construction and every normal person moves over before you are forced to and then ineveitably you have people who think its your duty to let them in. Well no sir you do not get let in, in fact I will purposefully slow down (not enough to let you in) but just enough to let the other guy behind me creep my bumper so that we dont both let you in.
I hate you people more than anything on this earth. And you have the gall to honk and give me the finger - learn some fracking manors your ignorant pieces of garbage. I show respect to those who do the same, your "trick" to delay your trip by a few seconds does not count as that, that rates about as high as some jacktard neighbour who would move someones recycle bin.
A close second are the asses at merge lanes who dont merge. The classic one that I see at least weekly is Crowchild to Transcanada West. And its always a certain type of person that is stopped waiting for what seems like a 5 minute gap in traffic. i was stuck behind one of these a$$es on Canada Day, I knew what was coming so left myself plenty of room between me and him, I gave have him 2 golden chances to merge and he didnt so I merged and waved while going in by. This isnt the farm or your 2 bit town, learn to drive or GTF out.

The feeling's mutual. I hate you people that jam on your brakes halfway down the wall of cars and flip on your signal. Drive to the end of the fricken land and start criss crossing.

What you just said. Watching traffic pile up behind some asshat who's "being polite" by stopping at the start of a merge lane, waiting for someone to let him in, is INFURIATING. If you drive down the merge lane, and merge as traffic moves it creates something called "flow", and doesn't disrupt commuters behind you or cause rear end accidents.
Why is that concept so hard to grasp?

A normal person merges early when a spot opens up, they dont zoom tot he end and then just merge. Those who drive to the end are doing it because they assume most people will just cave and let them in. These are the construction zone ones that give you plenty of notice, or the accident ones when you can see whats coming yet there are always those people (mostly who drive trucks) who think they are somehow superior to the rest of us.

Its not a normal merge lane, its one where a 3 lane road goes down to 2. It wasnt designed to merge, this isnt the hwy 2 merge I am talking about, its the construction zone merge. It does nothing to assist traffic flow, all it does is allow some people to save 5 seconds off there drive.

Its still a merge and yes it does help the flow better than stopping half from the end waiting for someone to let you in. If there's a spot open thats different but to just sit there makes no sense and start the back-up from where you are sitting and not from the end of the lane.
I love when 4X4 enters a driving thread.

Assuming they can do so at a speed which allows them to merge seamlessly into traffic then all the power to them. Its when they do so in a manner that causes traffic to slow down that there is a problem.

I disagree. I do it because it encourages proper flow/less braking. When everyone gets into their lane miles and miles ahead, it causes backups and jams.

So I got lots of notice the lane is ending? You still think its better we all move over miles early and cause a massive back-up in the right lane? Regardless of construction, accident, or road design, it simply makes more sense to carry on to the end of the lane and then take turns car for car.

If you think people who drive trucks are superior, I guess that means people who drive cars are inferior? Have fun with that complex there...

There seem to be very few people that can drive in a nice, thoughtful, logical way. The rest of the drivers fall into one of two groups:
1. You are the timid loser that freaks out that you have to turn left in about 12 minutes, so you slooooow down on McLeod Tr and start desperately trying to change lanes. Finally someone lets you in, even though you're going 20kph under the limit, and you get in to your coveted lane, only to proceed in that lane through 4 sets of lights before making that emergency turn.
2. You are the a-hole I spoke of earlier. The rules are the rules, dammit and you'll be damned if anyone is going to bend them while you're around. You are the same person that will go 40 down a one lane each way road, caring not about the many, many people behind you. Of course when you pull up to a light and a temporary extra lane appears, inevitably the guy behind you pulls up beside so that he can take off quick and get in front of you and go 50. But NO!! How dare he!! You'd better pin it so that he's forced back behind you once the parked cars eliminate his lane. You'll show him, won't you? You'll show him good by forcing him behind you again and then going 35.
The few left over are the people that go the limit all the time. Except when we're feeling a bit lazy. Then we're going 40. But when we see someone in aour rearview, we speed up and go the limit. We are also people that don't pull out in front of someone and go slow. We never turn left over a double solid unless there's nobody behind us. We always let people in that are going the same speed as us. When we turn right, we move closer to the curb so that the people behind can keep going and not lose their speed, we do not make a biiiig arc to the left before turning right unless we're towing a trailer. When we pull up to a light on a one lane each way road, we signal if we're turning left so that the people going straight through know to get into the other lane and not get stuck behind us while we wait to turn. We check our mirrors constantly and know all the cars around us. When we parallel park, we pull up to the car in front and thus only take up one spot, not two. When we speed, we only do it where it's safe. Weaving through traffic is not safe. Going 120 on Deerfoot is safe at certain times. When we turn a corner on a major road, we look at the G.D. f'n sign and we fricken well know whether it's a yield, merge, or if we have our own f'ing LANE! WHEN THERE ALOT OF F'ING TRAFFIC IN A LEFT TURN LANE, WE BLOODY WELL GO WHEN THERE'S A FREAKING GAP IN TRAFFIC. WE DO NOT WAIT FOR THE F'ING LIGHT TO TURN RED AND SCREW WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN 4 MORE CARS GETTING THROUGH. AND FFS WHEN A LIGHT TURNS GREEN ON A GREEN ARROW WE GO! GO YOU STUPID MORONS! GO! IT'S NOT GOING TO GET ANY GREENER AND IT'S NOT GOING TO FLASH ANY F'ING FASTER! WE ALL WANT TO TURN, NOT JUST YOU YOU INCONSIDERATE, MENTALLY LAZY A-HOLES!!!!
