That's the leading theory, that the mother is dead. I think it could be true. One of the last episodes when Ted was with the mother having dinner and she said something like, "what kind of mother misses their kid's wedding?" and Ted choked up. Why would he choke up over that?
I am looking forward to seeing how it plays out. I've invested too much time in it to not see it through now. Hopefully, it's good.
I would imagine that would have to do with his mother missing their wedding, seeing how he's talking to "the mother" at the time.
Unless she's a ghost and they go all sixth sense with it.

Ha, my wife had that theory, I told her she was full of poop.
The Mother says, "What kind of mother would miss her own daughter's wedding?" It only really makes sense for Ted to get choked-up there if he realizes that she is going to miss their own daughter's wedding. IIRC, that scene between Ted and The Mother took place in 2026, four years before Ted is telling his story, so their daughter would have been about 12 years-old at the time. If The Mother has been given less than five years to live, she won't live long enough to attend their daughter's wedding.
My off-the-wall prediction is that the Mother was dying (and had just been diagnosed when that episode took place), but ended up being saved by an organ donation from Barney (or maybe Robin). That's why Ted's story has been so much about before his meeting the mother, and he's letting the kids know how important Barney and Robin were in his life.
Either that, or the mother has been dead for a few years, Barney is dead too, and Ted is going to marry Robin.
Or, for a truly off-the-wall prediction: They're going to pull a Fight Club ending on us, and Barney truly was "legendary" (even his initials are BS), and it turns out that all the "Barney" stories Ted has been telling were about himself when he was a crazy womanizer and Robin ended up leaving him at the altar. At the depths of his despair, he met The Mother and became a whole new "Ted".
The creators have claimed that the finale effectively wraps up the story they started telling in the first episode. In the first episode, the kids act bored when Ted sits them down, and the son asks if they're being punished when Ted tells them he's going to tell them the story of how he met their mother. That doesn't seem like the reaction of a couple of kids whose mother has recently died.

That was a really well done finale - lots of twists and turns but everything felt sort of "right". I agree with all those who say it went a few seasons too long but they really brought it to a solid conclusion with this episode.
They get the actual meeting of Ted & The Mother out of the way pretty early and spent most of the episode covering the events of the next few years in everybody's lives:
- Barney and Robin get divorced after 3 years because of how much time Robin is travelling for work
- Robin stops hanging out with "the gang" as it's her ex, the guy she feels she should have been with and a couple
- Barney goes back to his old ways, gets a random girl pregnant and has a daughter
- Marshall eventually becomes a judge and he and Lily have a third kid
- Ted and The Mother take five years before getting married (and have their kids)
- The Mother gets sick and dies
- The show ends with Ted's kids telling him that the know the long, long story he's told them is his way of telling them how important Robin is in his life and asking their permission to start dating her. The final scene is Ted outside Robin's apartment with a blue french horn
Well, deal with it. I wasn't cheering for Canada either way. Nothing worse than arrogant Canadian fans. They'd be lucky to finish 4th. Quote me on that. They have a bad team and that is why I won't be cheering for them.
Not sure we should need spoiler tags in this thread, but I wouldn't want to be the one to ruin it for anyone, so....
Spoiler!
I liked the ending.
They explained how they met. They explained why the story always seemed to come back to Robin. It was realistic, in that not everything ended with a pretty bow on it. It was bittersweet. I got that sad feeling that I got when I realized I was grown up and everything was changing and it wasn't all about going to a bar and drinking with my friends anymore.
... And the return of the blue french horn.
I would say it was a solid ending. They managed to get Ted with the mother, for those that liked that relationship, but also have Ted with Robin, for those that always wanted them together.
Not sure what else to say.

When Ted started talking about how he enjoyed every moment and how he knew he had to love and treasure her (the kids mother) I got a lump in my throat knowing where it was going, and when she was in the hospital bed sick I was like.. god damn this is pretty gripping stuff but makes a lot of sense. The show really was about Ted and Robin all along, and in hindsight it makes so much and was... a beautiful ending I'd say. Me and the lady def had some Red eyes after the show

the secret was kept so well. Apparently Radnor knew the ending the whole time, and, clearly the kids also knew the ending as it was taped a long time ago. I guess they could have taped several ways for it to end but... still.
