burnin_vernon I am soo sorry for your loss. That is a tragic story. Husdon was a such a hansome boy! It is a month tomorrow since I had to put Iggy down. While I had a few dogs growing up my father was always their master, Iggy was truly my first dog where I was his master. Our bond was stronger than I even realized, the saying "you don't know what you have until it's gone" is truely fitting. I miss him all-day, everyday.
I just welled up and shed a tear as I sit here at my desk.
Take care.

Probably a good moment to insert this story just sent to me which Snopes says is true. It's actually from 2006:
"Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died,my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so thatwhen Abbey got to heaven, God wouldrecognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:
Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it.
Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven.
That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office.
A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand.
Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:
"Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to
remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.
Love, God

Our darling Molly
There never was a dog that was more loved, or more complicated or as clever or as beautiful. Molly was put to sleep this morning. She was diagnosed with advanced cancer of her spleen and liver. It had progressed very rapidly and I vowed I would never let our girl suffer in any way. The toughest decision I have ever made but the look in her eyes when I told her how sorry I was and how much I loved her let me know that I was making the right decision.
Can anyone embed this last photo of our beautiful girl as I would so love to share her with all of you? Thank you.

Condolences to both Burnin_Vernon and Suzles, I didn't see this thread come up last month so I've missed one or two.
Time does heal, 4 days from now will be the one year anniversary of the death of my dog Chiot posted earlier. I was out riding my bike today and had a powerful recollection of his last hours. That made me a little sad, but those times are fewer now.

Losing a dog just plain sucks. But take comfort with the fact that your pet was in a loving family and happy.

I know nobody like to see this at the top of the page but I'm trying to bring some positivity to my story. The memorial is up and while it was very hard, I'm hoping my story will help somebody.

Very well done. A great memorial, and a very good reminder to other people walking their dogs up there. All the best.

Today is a terrible day for me and my wife...We've had to put down our friend and protector of many, many years.
He was with us when we were young and in love, he was with us when we got engaged, he welcomed us home from the church when we were married, he was anxiously waiting for the arrival of our son from the hospital 2 and a half years ago...but most of all he is my best friend and has been for so long, he's forever tied to the happiest moments of my life...the heartache I feel right now is simply overwhelming and I can't take a step in the house without a reminder of my friend, his happy-go-lucky spirt and love for his mom & dad.
I only hope you know how much you mean to me pal, I miss you , i love you, keep your ball close we'll have a catch again someday my friend.

Great tribute.
Choked me up. Some people truly don't get what an amazing family member a dog is. Sorry to hear man.

Sincere thanks, and I couldn't agree more about the family member statement.
It's been a rough day, my eyes are sore from tearing up so much...I took a walk to get away from reminders, but every wisp through the long grass caused me to turn awaiting a bounding dog to be coming towards me.
I knew this would be tough, but it's way harder than I thought.

I know exactly how you feel. It's been a year and a half since I had to post in this thread, and even though I still have our other dog, our first puppy that passed away was exactly as you describe and I still miss him. He was my wife's birthday present from me shortly after we started dating and came through the same milestones with us. It hurts, but is gets better with time of course and the memories are happy.

I going through this right now as well. We put down our Lonnie on the 29th.
I can't talk about it on the phone with friends or family without crying.
Heck, I won't even be able to type what I want to. I will cut and paste what my husband wrote on his FB....
Quote:
So long Lonnie. Your time with us was much too short. I am happy that you could at least spend your final year as a member of a family rather than a breeding machine in a kennel as you had been.
You were a great and loving dog and Jane, Stewie and I will all miss you. Rest in peace girl.
I ask of others on behalf of Lonnie, please try to avoid patronizing puppy-mills or the stores that utilize them. There are so many good dogs that need adoption out there.

Seven months to the day that we lost our best girl. I have her photo on the fridge and I still talk to her. I miss her so much but it does start to get easier. At least I can talk about her now with blubbing. My sympathies to all those above who have recently lost their dearest companions.
