Agreed, it's a tactic that every NFL coach has been attempting to employ for as long as I can remember.

The most memorable had to be that debacle between the Titans and Steelers the one year in the playoffs where they attempted to call the timeout like 3 times, roughed the kicker a couple times as well and ultimately failed to call it that last time before Nedney did make the kick.

Don't think it's been that close to the snap before until Shanahan. Timeouts have been taken and you could clearly hear the whistle before. This year teams are running on the field celebrating and being pushed back by the refs. It's waaaaay to close now, milliseconds!

Just a question, why can't we have a new thread for each week of the season?

I envy you. I'd love to at least see my team being competitive enough during a game for it even to come down to the dying seconds. I'm getting sick of watching blowouts...

Yep, this season is a nightmare thus far for us Saint fans, so much promise to utter disappointment. The complete give away that was the Saints/Panthers tilt on Sunday was excruciating to watch unfold.

This form of the timeout tactic has only been employed for the past couple years since the competition committee changed the rule to allow the coaches to call timeouts from the sidelines rather than players on the field.

ESPN said that the competition committee will revisit the issue with a proposal that timeouts by the defensive team cannot be called from the sidelines with less than 5 seconds left on the play clock.

I could see a realistic exception to that one though- if you've got 12 guys on the field, and the coach sees it, he can call a timeout.

So even if they line up with 12 guys- the trick for the offense would be to snap the ball quicker- get either a timeout or a 5 yard penalty called against the other team.

Yes, that's what announcers and others have said against the rule change. I dont like the rule the way it is - Im a Raiders fan and we were hurt by it against Denver and benefited from it against Cleveland - but I dont know how to change it without further complications.

And didn't that come about largely because of that Steelers Titans game where Cowher had obviously instructed Porter to call one just before they got the play off?

Oh man, didnt you just feel like pulling your hair out after that 24 play, 11 minute drive resulted in nothing more than a blocked FG?? It actually set an NFL record for longest drive in history that resulted in zero points, sickening!! The worst part was, the way the Panthers were playing, they would not have been able to come back from a two score defecit that late in the game IMO. After that kick was blocked I seriously temporarily looked around the room for something cheap to break.

Season from HELL!!

Complete B.S.

It happens EVERY year and most of the time more than once.

Changes nothing!

Players used to call them on the field, and they will do it again if they forbid coaches to call them with less than 5 on the play clock.

Completely ridiculous.

This topic REALLY gets to you huh? Must stem from your Broncos getting pants last week.

Seriously, I dont like it, but messing with the rules too much and the NFL starts looking like the NBA or even the NHL. Too much tinkering can definitely be a bad thing.

Not that I think the Chiefs are anything speacil this season. But you may want to add your New Orleans Saints to the top of your list.

I still think the Saints will turn it around somewhat(not enough to make the playoffs, but I just cant see them finishing at like 2-14 or something ridiculous like that), but just for argument's sake, if the Saints do end up at the bottom of the pile, they better trade down a couple spots and draft LSU DT Glenn Dorsey or possibly Michigan OT Jake Long. btw its pathetic Im even looking ahead to draft day in early October.

Is there any statistcal evidence that freezing the kicker has any effect on conversion success? I doubt it makes any difference.

The only people who benefit are the networks who get to fit in another TV ad.

Not so much that...but 2 things....

1. People calling something well within the rules bush league is a joke. I realize that wasn't you.

2nd and more importantly, there is a pervasive hate for Shanahan for some reason and it kills me. I guess it's success and that bothers people, although the Broncos haven't had much success since 1998. I'm not talking about here either, it's more in the football world.

But yeah, the joke of a game that was played on Sunday is still getting to me. They had a chance to bury San Diego in the division and absolutely soiled themselves. You could blame it on a rookie QB except that he was by far their best player. Travis Henry was absolute dog dung. How many times did he trip over himself? Our newly called up return man screwed up worse than the guy he replaced....and this is a guy that has been around for 4 years and has played that role in the past. It's not as if he was some kid returning his first kick in the NFL. Darrent Williams is probably rolling over in his grave watching this defense. Champ Bailey can't be your shut down corner and a linebacker. Sorry....I'm ranting!

Taking personal shot's at someone you've never met over the internet is...well...gutless!

Nothing that Shanahan (or Jauron, etc.) did was outside of the rules and it certainly wasn't "gutless". If the coaches weren't able to call a timeout from the sidelines the players would try to call them last minute from the field just like they used to!
