I would love to know the advice Kylington's agent provided him.
Based on Kylington's history now of missing 1.5yrs, I can't see other teams being overly keen on taking on that risk.

Does the Bean signing mean Kyllington as a Flame is dead...?

Based on Conroy's comments yesterday, not dead, but highly unlikely. And yes, Bean fills the same role.

The flames clearly have a #6 spot open on their roster. Unless that spot is for Parekh, Hanley or Pachal...there is a spot open that Kylington could presumably fill.

I suspect Conroy wouldn't mind having him back but probably warned him prior to July 1 that if nothing gets done, they will find an option on the free agent market (which they did - Bean) and it's going to have to be a very specific scenario to come back once that happened.
I think the dude has qualities that can benefit our blueline. I was fully prepared to see him on the team in September based on the goodwill between both camps when he returned from his absence. His skillset doesn't change just because he's not on the Flames.
I think he finds an NHL team, but maybe not to the expectations he thought he could get. And this is likely a signing happening later in the season, as it would be wise to see which team is going to panic with their blueline depth once the free agent dust settles and make it a seller's market. Likely chance some team is going to look for upgrades closer to the season start and Kylington could fit that bill.

Weegar - Miromanov
Bean - Andersson
Bahl - Pachal/Solovyov
Signing Kylington now would push Pachal or Solovyov onto waivers, unless the Flames want to carry 8 D (and Hanley would be pushed on waivers, which is fine IMO). There is still room, but the Flames will have to carry 8D, and that means Pachal and Solovyov will barely get playing time, which I think is crucial for their development. Kylington is 27, Pachal is 24 and Solovyov is 23.
There are a lot of young prospects that could also use whatever minutes become available through injury time - Kuznetsov, Poirier, Grushnikov, maybe Jurmo (who has been playing against men already). Brzustewicz should probably spend the entire season in the AHL, but if he is doing really well, a cup of coffee for him should be given.
This is a rebuilding team, and I think the priority should be getting as much development time in as possible for the prospects on the bottom pairing. Bean replaced Kylington in my mind. I think the Flames are full on defence.

There looks like a lot of teams with ample capspace, and almost zero teams that will need to dump players.
Why did Buffalo even buy out Skinner? They have $20 mil in space and there is nobody to spend it on.

Meh. I don't really see him as a long term answer on the club and anything beyond 1-2 years on his next deal is not only risky, but doesn't fit with where the club is headed. He's 27 now and is what he is. If the price and term was right, I would be fine with it. It looks like it probably wasn't and I'm glad Conroy is sticking to his guns here.
It's actually somewhat weird that Kylington wouldn't have signed a 1 year deal as he really has a lot further to go in his comeback than merely suiting up for 30 games and expecting a long term commitment from anyone, let alone the Flames seems a bit strange.

I love the Kylington story, and support him 100%. If he does sign in Calgary I'm going to be cheering for him to climb up the depth chart.
But I've never really seen it.
He had a really good run with Chris Tanev as a defensive partner (Tanev improves everyone), but he's never been all that dependable on his own and can't anchor a pairing.

I would give him a longer term contract with a games played bonus for each year. Limits the risk of no show while still having a chance for the upside.

Bean can apparently play both sides, so we could still sign him and not have to worry too much about pairings and such.

Oil Stains need D and are in cap hell.
Give us Max Wanner, 2026 1st and a cap dump (that's not Kane), and we'll give you one of Hanley/Pachal.
Time to pay the piper hosers.

He doesn't qualify for a contract with bonuses, even though I agree that would be ideal as a risk-mitigation for this situation.

I am on vacation in France and Italy so… “au revoir prends soin de toi”and “ arrivederci”. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. I will not miss you.

I wouldn't read too much into Kylington not being signed. He's not the piece you build your defence around. He's the piece you round out your defence with, once you've settled a lot of your other contract and roster issues.
He probably wants to sign for something more long term. He should realize though that he's basically back at the needing to prove himself stage. He played 33 games in the last 2 years. Would be a great pickup on a 1-2 year deal. Don't see teams gambling on more than that though. I also don't see him needed to go the PTO route, but I could be wrong.
