Cap space and more options could equal a cheaper acquisition cost. Flames are more under the gun to make a trade if the Devils think they are too far behind.

I’m just not sure if the cost is the same in the summer. I guess if Conroy has decided the price for Markstrom is the same now or in the summer and his price won’t go down no matter what. Goalies are such voodoo… right now, Markstrom is the hottest goalie in the league. This summer and going into the 2024-2025 season, no one knows for sure what he or any goalie would be. In the last 5 years he has consistently alternated great seasons where he is in the Vezina conversation with terrible seasons where he would be considered a guy you would have to add assets to in order to trade. His value is the highest it has been in years so selling him now is probably the best return you can get.
The fact is though, Conroy could just choose to keep him and just have him around to transition Wolf to being the starter. It would probably be a great strategy both for Wolf and for the team. So the incentive to trade him has to be high whether it is now or in the summer or during the season next year, etc.

Right now arguably his value in the trade market is the equivalent of two firsts. His value is likely the highest it’s ever been. While I mostly agree with everything I disagree with the last sentence. I’m sure he’d be a good mentor and all that but at the cost of two firsts? Plus him winning games diminishes their draft position. I’d much rather trading him now, getting those assets, then signing a respectable vet to help with the transition to Wolf in the next couple years. It’s a win win to deal Markstrom now. I’d say the same principle applies to anyone on the team and their mentorship roles. If the price fits, deal. Then sign cheap mentors to help or invest in the coaching staff and trainers.

His value will never be higher. One year ago this time we would have moved out major assets to get rid of his contract. Now we could land a huge return?
No brainer imo.

If the Flames think they can compete for a playoff, they won’t move Markstrom
Otherwise, it’s a no brainer if someone wants him, retain or not. Edward is not an idiot, he can do the the math

The Flames don't NEED to trade Markstrom right now. Trading him now is giving up on the season. Also, trading your #1 goaltender is part of a rebuild, not a retooling.

To me it just sounds like negotiating. I think the only thing different in this circumstance vs the other assets and the deadline, is there is that additional wrinkle of where NJ are in the standings. If they fall to far than this will be something that they will have to revisit in the summer. Currently they are 6 back of the WC and 8 back for the D3. They do have 3 games in hand on Philly. Hopefully Conroy can get Jersey to pull the trigger while there is a bit more runway left in the season.

Not sure, I understand why its a rebuild.
Markstrom has 2 years left after this season, he is 34.
Flames are likely not a contender with the retooling in that window anyhow.

In most cases you'd be right. But most teams who trade their #1 don't have a prospect like Wolf waiting in the wings.

Mercer + Bahl + 2024 1st + 2025 2nd
For
Markstrom (2 million retained)
Hanifin (50% retained)
Works cap wise on both sides. Can always take Vaneck back to insulate Wolf and trade Vladar.
Who says no?
I would do it.

It's funny that the Flames currently have one more point and are closer to the final wildcard spot in their Conference than the Devils are.

The same Blackwood that was traded 3 months later for a 6th round draft pick is the reason why the haul they gave up for Meier makes sense? Not sure that is the case.

The Devils trying to salvage this season made sense a few weeks ago, but makes less sense as they continue to fall further out of a playoff spot. If they go on a run before the deadline, definitely think this deal will go through. If they have a rough couple weeks, that's probably it for the season for them and we'll see what happens in the summer.
Wonder if all these leaks on the deal are mostly coming from the NJ side. Maybe either to put some pressure on the Flames, or as a way to show their fanbase they tried to improve their goaltending but deal hang up was due to the Flames retention requirements (restriction/amount/compensation).

Devils with Markstrom goaltending would certainly be in a much better spot, though.
Jack Hughes is a top 5 NHL player (when he isn't injured), and they have tons of other very strong pieces in a good age range, so I can understand them sacrificing some of their young depth to fill their massive hole in net.

I consider what the Flames are doing closer to a retool than a rebuild. They have enough pieces that are decent enough that this team will not, barring a lottery win, get a pick in the top 5. They are targeting players on the verge of taking that step rather than straight futures. Similar to Vegas when they built their team from the expansion draft.

Makes sense. I’d take the package without the 2nd for Hanifin pretty happily. Paying $4.5M for a 2nd is a bit steep, but so be it. I think Markstrom has zero value at best though, hence the retention needs.

Oh it was awful. Blackwood was supposed to be the next one for awhile. I don’t know why they made the Meier deal. Classic media hype last year inflated his value.
