There is nothing wrong with being a family man but not taking your job seriously and willfully sucking at your job because you don't care that much is kind of messed up.
I highly doubt a swap would ever take place but if it were on the table I think you take it and run. The 5 years left on Johnny's contract just seems so much more manageable and would have better options sooner.

Imagine showing up to your job and telling them I'm not all in because I'm not focused on being a family man but I'll still expect my full salary for giving 50%.
You'll be sent packing

Hahaha but nobody dares to fire a guy because he prioritize family these days
Demanding work life balance is at all time high
I met some new grad that demanded remote work so he doesn’t have to get out of bed early lol

Both have full NMC’s. Would both waive?

Johnny is likely not skipping practice for daycare drop offs or anything like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a guy who deeply regrets a decision he made a year ago be it to stay in Calgary or sign with the Devils but he is languishing on a bad team and likely is not seeing eye to eye with the coach.

in hindsight we should have seen that Gaudreau would be the type of guy to take a "retirement contract" literally
Less money in Columbus always seemed like a no pressure to win kinda deal
his off ice commitment was never strong even as a single guy

I feel like Johnny would as well at least he has a legacy he could resume here.
While it is unlikely to happen there is a big part of me that think it makes so much sense that I can see it happening

Flames would likely have to eat salary to even things up there...plus that extra 2 years
I wouldn't be shocked if Huberdeau went there and started putting up points either

Maybe if they ate $750k to make the cap hits wash that would be fine. Ultimately if Columbus has soured on Gaudreau and think they can better utilize Huberdeau who knows how much retention or sweetners would need to be added at all? French Canadian coach, play more of a rush style, maybe the playmaker Laine needs, it is hard to get superstars there. Maybe I am over analyzing it but with how terrible Johnny has been maybe Columbus would like to cut bait.
I can’t see Johnny having much value with his age and contract. I would rather rebuild with Johnny than Huby

Johnny to Philly - he'd waive. Huberdeau to Columbus. He'd waive. Laughton and Tippett to Calgary.

Why would Columbus want Huberdeau?
How does Calgary manage to get decent value from the worse contract in The NHL?
Just fantasy land.
Columbus would just take the value from Philly.

To get rid of Johnny who needs to waive, but continue to have a guy to pass to Laine. I don't see anyone who's a real fit on Philly for Columbus (who are supposed to be moving up, not down) as opposed to Calgary, who can take on some old shorter term contracts.
It's "worst" (pet internet peeve). And I'd take Huberdeau over Nurse.

Maybe if Gaudreau is bad enough, they'd consider a 'change of scenery' swap. If they think they have the right pieces to work with huberdeau and Calgary retains some salary to make it an even in/out in AAV.
Pretty sure Huberdeau has more points now.
It's been speculated that Jarmo is on the hot seat, hence the desperate coaching move to bring in Babcock, so he's looking to get results now, not trying shed 'now' players for cap.
It's actually more fantasy that that would happen with Philly
Pretty sure they aren't interested in their current situation. They could've signed him for free last offseason and didn't.

This trade makes too much sense to me, I think if both players continue struggling I see a trade happening to shake both teams up.

Obviously hinges on Columbus' interest and we have no idea what that is, but I hope that Conroy plants this seed with CBJ in case they come around to it.

Thoughts on this 3 team blockbuster?
To CGY: Gaudreau + Gudbransen
To CLB: Huberdeau, Garland, 1st (Van 24 lotto protected)
To VAN: Tanev
I can see Van fans balking at Tanev for a 1st but they get out of Garland’s contract which opens up cap space this summer to improve the team and give Pettersson and Hronek big contracts while solidifying their blueline with a former fan favorite.
Calgary sacrifices one of their big rental trade chips to offload Huby’s deal. They take back the very bad Gudbransen contract but he fills a need on the team that will be lost with the Zadorov trade. Columbus has been looking to trade a D and Gudbransen is likely their worst contract. Johnny comes back to Calgary and fans would welcome him back with open arms and be relieved to get out from Huberdeau’s deal.
Columbus turns 2 poor free agent decisions a year ago into 2 other teams regrettable blockbuster trade acquisitions. They get a 1st out of the deal and get 2 players who fit their mix a little better. They were rumored to be in on Garland and perhaps Huberdeau is the guy to mesh with Laine? They take a big risk with the Huby deal but offload 2 poor contracts and get a 1st
