Under some of the logic used here, Stuart Skinner should be considered a Vezina candidate already with a 0.921 save %.

IMO, Marky is already getting better and better-and will continue to do so as the team starts gelling. We had a lot of turnover in key positions, and we just need to get the guys all pulling in the same direction, which is starting to happen. I'm not worried about Marky at all.

Not when they clearly also swallow whole whatever it is they are selling.

Yeah, that's the thing. Using hyperbole for rhetorical effect is one thing. Making that hyperbole the basis of one's whole argument just makes one look like one hasn't got a real case to argue.

The fact is, it is not possible at this time for Markstrom to show that the Edmonton series was not a fluke. Anything he does for the rest of the regular season can be dismissed, and I am confident it will be dismissed by the sort of fans who are determined to be unhappy. Only next spring's playoffs will tell.

Until then, all we can look at is how Markstrom is playing from day to day, and whether he's improving. At present he appears to be. He was playing too deep in his crease for a while, and a number of posters have mentioned that he seems to have corrected that. This is likely to make a big difference to his results. But it can't make any difference to his playoff results until the playoffs actually start.

"Selling"...

Never ceases to amaze me how people spin things.

Whatever. I'm done with this thread. Hopefully Marky turns his season around.

The level of panic that Markstrom’s no longer an NHL starter, that he’s completely lost it - I think that should definitely be subsiding. Credit where it’s due, he’s a really good NHL goalie, and lots of guys are struggling to start the year. Scoring is way up league wide.

He was the second best goalie of the first round behind Oettinger, and he made big save after big save.

He’s still good. He hasn’t been injured.

The team in front of him was completely overhauled, and they don’t quite know how to work together yet. Tanev has been injured. Stone is out. No Kylington. That’s three key defence men who either played a huge role in your terrific regular season or your playoff success.

That’ll have an impact.

But they’ll figure it out. There are too many good players in that room, and I trust the coach more than anyone else in hockey.

Relax.

I certainly didn’t intend for my comment to lead to such a long argument or any piling on. Apologies

Weird that this is your first mention of hypocrisy, then. I thought this was about people misinterpreting you. Or was it about the evidence of Markstrom’s stellar play being woefully insufficient? Hard to keep track.

What I mean by “ease off the gas” is don’t read comments where the poster didn’t even remember you as being comments that “mock” you and don’t accuse others of antagonizing/piling on/grasping at straws/etc when everyone else is just having a normal one. Read the room and relax.

Textcritic already nailed this one (despite the lame suggestion he’s “spinning” something lol) but also, “if people shouldn’t do this why did one other person do it????” is an incredibly poor way to justify something. Fans panic all the time. Some fans lose their entire life savings betting on sports. Some fans get into fights or hurl racist insults at players from the stands. Is it ok if we say fans shouldn’t do those things even though some do? You would agree to that, right? Great.

End of the day, you’re allowed to have whatever opinion about Markstrom you want to have. And so is everyone else. Mine is that it’s always too early to panic and I’m seeing good things in his game lately. You’re not going to convince me otherwise and I don’t care to convince you of it, cool?

But it's also very unlikely that Markstrom finishes anywhere near last year's 92.2%. Very few goalies in the league will get this save percentage. It's possible, Wolf has basically done this already (he started of slow but has since rebounded). But Markstrom would have to start playing better very soon.

The same goes for Vladar. He'll finish above his current 88.1%. This isn't a bold prediction.
It's extremely unlikely, simply because the stats from these first 15 games remain in the total. Assuming the same 63 games, he would have to play at a .932 pace the rest of the way (for 48 games) to finish with a .922 save percentage.

And this illustrates what we are going to see from fans all year long: no matter how well he plays, they will quote his save percentage, which will continue to look poor, due to these first 15 games.

No amount of success from Markstrom, going forward, will appease some fans, because this number will continue to look weak, even when he is playing well.

I think fans, myself included, look to see wins, reduction in awful back breaking gaffs and more confidence inspiring play from Markstrom. If his gaa is higher than last year and we make the playoffs and he doesn't shart the bed, I'll be happy. Time will tell.

If this proves to be the case, it almost certainly means no deep playoff run this year. Disappointing considering the team is in a short win-now window.

Is the only thing to do to shrug and pretend like it's no big deal? Maybe the answer is yes. But in that case I would have to ask what the point of being a fan if winning/losing means so little?
It's November.

The Flames (contender or not) have the 2nd place Vezina goaltender from last season.

That's a fact.

He's off to a tough start ... fact.

He seems to be getting better ... seems to be a fact.

But it's an overreaction to make statements like the above.

Comes in, says something silly, allows himself to be piled on by doubling, tripling, quadripling down, runs away mad he didn't win.

In other words, just another great day on CP!

One thing that's promising is he made the tough saves. He was just messing up easy ones.

I think he'll figure it out.

I thought Markstrom was overrated last year and I have been very critical of his play so far this year. But I don't think he's done as a starter - although I may have written that after the third goal in Tampa Bay...I think I blacked out after that monstrosity.

Surely he is capable of getting back to being a .910 goalie, which should be good enough if the other parts of this team can play to their potential as well.

I had him underrated last year, decent SP on bad teams, injured often during first season with flames under Geoff Ward and everyone underachieved so figured he would be a lot better with someone like Sutter which he was... but then came the oilers series and this season.. dont know what to think now.
